Austria-Hungary - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Austro-Hungarian Army suffered very serious casualties throughout the war.
The disputes between the halves of the empire culminated in the mid-1900s in a prolonged constitutional crisis -- triggered by disagreement over the language of command in Hungarian army units, and deepened by the advent to power in Budapest (April 1906) of a Hungarian nationalist coalition.
Although the unified government determined overall military direction, the Austrian and Hungarian governments each remained in charge of "the quota of recruits, legislation concerning compulsory military service, transfer and provision of the armed forces, and regulation of the civic, non-military affairs of members of the armed forces".

Before 1914 Austria-Hungary had several potential war theatres that involved mountains or very hilly terrain, and consequently the Autro-Hungarian Army employed and/or tested a number of Mountain Gun types.
The main problem was that the German Army used the gun in a role that it was not intended for, i.e.

Following heavy defeat at the Battle of Vittorio Veneto, which heralded the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Army as an effective fighting force, the Austrian government sought and negotiated an armistice; meanwhile simultaneous political turmoil completed the disintegration of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

The Schwarzlose was also used on an ad hoc basis by both the Italian and Russian armies - from captured supplies of the Austro-Hungarian weapon.
