Laterocytic stomata are common in the order, and the cuticle surface is radiate-striate around secretory cells that are to be found on the lower surface of the leaf blade in Austrobaileyaceae and Schisandraceae, at least (see Baranova 2004b for discussion).
Austrobaileyaceae are sister to the other members of the order.
Austrobaileyaceae are lianes with opposite and entire leaves and large, pendulous flowers.
