A full version of F 40 is given by Polyaenus (7.42) who calls the people Autariatae.
In defence of the reading "Ardiaeans", Flower remarks, "It is bad method, however, to give precedence to a paraphrase by Polyaenus over a verbatim quotation by Athenaeus, given the latter's general reliability and the simplicity of the emendation.
The more northerly Autariatae were much closer to the Celts than the Ardiaeans.

Some archaeologists propose that the Proto-Illyrians settled in what would become Illyria as early as the Early Bronze Age, and presumably soon mingled with the previous non-Indo-European inhabitants.
This mixture would eventually result in the formation of the Illyrian tribes who inhabited Illyria in the Classical period---the Autariatae, Dassaretae, Chelidones, Taulanti, etc.---who were kin to tribes further north, also often classed as Illyrians: the Dalmatae, Pannoni, and others.
The Illyrians produced and traded cattle, horses, agricultural goods, and wares fashioned from locally-mined copper and iron.

Nowadays, the equation of material culture with linguistic and political groups is seen as problematic, as neither the rate of culture change nor of linguistic change is well known.
It was settled by a number of Illyrian tribes---the Autariatae, Dassaretae, Chelidones, Taulanti, etc.---who are considered by scholars to be the Illyrians proper, whereas the many groups to the north---Pannoni, Dalmatae, Liburni, Iapodes---are considered to be distinct from the "true" Illyrians to the south (Wilkes, 1992, et.
Modern nationalist ideologies however tend to minimize the differences and tribal mixing, and often incorrectly refer to all these peoples as "Illyrians".

Mythological stories concerning the name of Illyria
This mythological story pleases me the most, although many others are also told by many writers.
(4) Illyrius had the sons Encheleus, Autarieus, Dardanus, Maedus, Taulas, Perrhaebus and the daughters Partho, Daortho, Dassaro and others, from whom arose the peoples of the Taulantii, Perrhaebi, Enchelei, Autariatae, Dardanians [and Maedi], Partheni, Dassaretii and Darsi.
Autarieus himself had a son Pannonius or Paeon, who in turn had Scordiscus and Triballus, from whom nations also were descended who were named after them.
