David Lynch - The Elephant Man and Dune - An Auteur In Hollywood
And, in answering the structuralist critics of the auteur theory, is Lynch's vision effected by the constraints of the genres he worked in.
It is probably too early into his career to formulate a theory on this matter, there are no examples of comparable works thus far (such as the Cary Grant/James Stewart films of Hitchcock), but Lynch, in his use of stars does seem aware of their influence on a text.
Instead of uncovering an auteur within a text it is a structure within the text that is uncovered by auteur analysis, he says "Fuller or Hawks or Hitchcock, the directors are quite separate from 'Fuller' or 'Hawks' or 'Hitchcock', the structures named after them".

In various sciences, a theory is a logically self-consistent model or framework for describing the behavior of a certain natural or social phenomenon, thus either originating from or supported by experimental evidence (see scientific method).
For a given body of theory to be considered part of established scientific knowledge, it is usually necessary for it to characterize a critical experiment, namely an experimental result not predicted by any existing established theory.
In the humanities, theory is often used as an abbreviation for critical theory or literary theory, referring to continental philosophy's aesthetics or its attempts to understand the structure of society and to conceptualize alternatives.

This theory espouses that all good directors (and many bad ones) have such a distinctive style that their fingerprints end up on the film.

THE GENESIS AND FORMULATION OF THE AUTEUR THEORY
The auteur theory became a popular form of film analysis in the 1950s, and it remained in the forefront of analytic techniques throughout most of the 60's.
An important aspect of the theory to keep in mind is that the Hollywood directors initially praised by the French film theorists as auteurs were not necessarily revered at home.
In other words, the auteur theory is based in part on an idea -- which was radical at the time -- that cinematic masterpieces were not the exclusive domain of culturally elite directors; rather, filmmakers who had previously been dismissed as commercial (see above) have indeed made significant personal statements in their oeuvres.

Other directors bring a particular artistic vision to the pictures they make (see auteur theory).
Their methods range from some who like to outline a general plot line and let the actors improvise dialogue (such as Robert Altman and Christopher Guest), to those who control every aspect, and demand that the actors and crew follow instructions precisely (such as Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick).
