In telecommunication, the term authenticator is a symbol or group of symbols, or a series of bits, selected or derived in a prearranged manner and usually inserted at a predetermined point within a message or transmission for the purpose of attesting to the validity of the message or transmission.
For information about other meanings, see authenticity.'' In computer security, authentication (Greek: ''αυθεντικός'', from 'authentes'='author') is the process by which a computer, computer program, or another user attempts to confirm that the computer, computer program, or user from whom the second party has received some communication is, or is not, the claimed first party.
In a Web of trust "authentication" is a way to ensure users are who they say they are--that the user who attempts to perform functions in a system is in fact the user who is authorized to do so.

 More about Realism - theRPGsite
A war genre book can be "authentic" in the sense of portraying and trasmitting real information or an accurate synthesis of the events that went down.
If you think that it actually "realistically simulates" what it was like to be there, in the sense that you think you can now talk expertly about being in the jungles of nam with your buddies because you read a war diary about it, then there's something wrong with you.
Since no game lives up to this, then you therefore claim that no RPG has anything remotely to do with reality, and anyone who mentions reality at all with respect to RPGs is completely off base and insane.

Introduction: This is a revision and expansion of a pair of posts I made over on the ENWorld General RPG forum.
I wrote those because I found the theory of magic presented by P.E.I. "Isaac" Bonewits in his "Authentic Thaumaturgy" a tad mundane.
I figure, if you're going to present a theory of magic, it should at the very least be interesting.

P.E.I. Bonewits received a Bachelor of Arts in Magic and Thaumaturgy in 1970 from the University of California.
Bonewits is (or was) a very controversial figure (particularly, as you might imagine, in academic circles) and his writing style portrays that.

Authentic Thaumaturgy: Mono-, Duo- & Polytheisms
Here’s an excerpt from the Second Edition of Authentic Thaumaturgy, my book on magic and religion for players of fantasy games such as Advanced Dungeons and Dragons®, G.U.R.P.S.®, and Magic: The Gathering®, etc. “A.T.” is published by Steve Jackson Games and is available from them, from Amazon.com, or from your local game store.
An authentic pure monotheism occurs only after the magical technology in a given culture has become so incompetent that miracles don’t happen anymore, intellectuals become completely materialistic, and nobody really believes in any deities as real personalities.
The problem, of course, is that such systems of belief don’t really count as “religions” any more (as we’re defining the term herein), because their philosophical and ethical beliefs no longer have a magical system connected.

Bonewits points out, it has little, if anything, to do with the way most people modern or past think about magic.
Authentic Thaumaturgy is, if nothing else, an interesting read about the author's take on describing how a GM might design a "realistic" magic system for any game system, not just GURPS.
He talks in depth about how people, past and present, view magic and how it really works, and points out that, for some, it really is a religion or way of life not to be taken lightly.

Originally a rewrite of Real Magic for FRP gamers, the book now discusses the major innovations in game magic theory that have developed over the last ten years, especially the GURPS® and the Magic: The Gathering® systems, as well as a great deal of polytheological materials on magic and religion not included in Real Magic.
Authentic Thaumaturgy has had a profound effect on the FRP community and is a favorite of many Dungeon Masters (game referees) and players.
If you're tired of trying to make fellow gamers understand how magic really works or are interested in game design, this book will be a major help.

But thaumaturgic seems to have enjoyed a happy life in the hands of Carlyle, who deploys it in Sartor Resartus ("The grand thaumaturgic art of Thought") and in his life of Schiller ("Various thaumaturgic feats").
Other variations on this word include thaumaturgical, thaumaturgist (Carlyle again, from some of his minor writing: "No conjuror...can any longer pass for a true thaumaturgist"), thaumaturgus (which is, simply, a thaumaturge/thaumaturgist), and thaumaturgy.
For that last word, Carlyle again provides an example, again from Sartor Resartus: "A World of Miracles, wherein all fabled or authentic Thaumaturgy, and feats of Magic, were outdone." But thaumaturgy's first usage example places an additional spin on the word: it comes from the 1727 ed.
