		Important means of attack as men and vehicles are assembled; three infantry divisions are supported by many units : infantry, artillery, 350 tanks and even naval artillery.
		Authie is conquered in the afternoon, at the cost of 160 casualties and seven Shermans destroyed, and in spite of a fanatic resistance of the Hitlerjugend Division grenadiers.
		This monument commemorates the fightings in Authie and its vicinity of the North Nova Scotia Highlander on 7 June 1944.

		A counterattack at Authie and Buron stopped the Canadian advance, and 37 disarmed Canadian POWs were shot at Authie.The bodies of some were put on the road to be pulverized by tanks moving to the front.
		Authie's main street is today called Rue des 37 Canadiens.
		It was a wonderful way to explore the backroads and farming villages of southern Calvados, with their medieval churches, small manor houses and old stone barns and granaries.

	Battles 1944
		The area of Normandy the Division was to start fighting in as the Calvados region, south of the Bay of the Seine.
		The advance then continued to the next river obstacle the Authie, where stiffening resistance was met from German companies and battalions.
		At St. Pol strong resistance was met and a tough fire ensued, with 8th Hussars and the 1/5th Queen's infantry eventually flushing most of the enemy out, except for a small force with three anti-tank guns.

		The reported ascendancy of German Divisions over Canadian was disturbing and considered important enough to examine, particularly when it is appreciated that the Canadian Army had been in England for four years training for battle.
		Realistic training was impossible, cross country movement was: "restricted to rds [roads] and edges of any fds [fields] under plough." In addition, the tactics themselves were based on North African experience and totally impractical for Normandy.
		Supported by a panzer battalion, the Panzer Grenadier's attack swept through Authie, Gruchy, Franqueville and Buron, overrunning the lead companies of the North Nova Scotia Regiment.

		As opposition had stiffened and the advanced guard was now both dispersed and dangerously isolated, it was decided to withdraw the Canadian platoons who had entered AUthie and concentrate somewhat to the north.
		The village was overrun and most of the mend in it killed or captured, and a company of the North Nova Scotias in position between Authie and BUron was likewise shot to pieces.
		In the early evening, Buron itself was violently attacked and the single company of Highlanders holding it lost very heavily before the survivors were brought off by a tank attack supported by artillery.

		The street in front of the memorial square was called ‘Rue des 37 Canadiens’ in remembrance of Canadian POWs killed by the SS in the town and whose bodies were subsequently desecrated.
		Homemade Calvados was poured for those of us around the table; the first sip left me gasping for air – it was much more potent than the store-bought version.
