Topic: Author citation (botany)

Definition of Binomial nomenclature - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Conventions in author citation differ somewhat between botany (plants) and zoology (animals), and are governed by the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature and International Code of Zoological Nomenclature respectively.
The name or names of plant authors are abbreviated to a standardised index of author names published by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew; the date of publication is not cited in brief citations.
The name or names of animal authors have their surname given in full, not abbreviated, while first names are not included, or if two authors share the same surname, are given as initials.

 Validation of Citation Analysis
In their recent "Citation Content Analysis of a Botany Journal"(MacRoberts and MacRoberts,1997), the MacRoberts continue to rail about the strawman they created a decade ago to discredit citation analysis.
A recent example is the literature of apoptosis that I have recently studied with the editor of a journal in that field in spite of an exponential growth of the literature on programmed cell death, the core articles, many almost 50 years Id, are still regularly cited (Garfield and Melino, 1997).
The MacRoberts team would perform a far more relevant service were they to compile a citation index of all their historical sources and from this determine who are the most cited authors and then compare them to lists of influential authors compiled by questionnaire or focus groups.

Draft BioCode: the prospective international rules for the scientific names of organisms   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
In case of doubt, the gender assigned by the author of the name or, failing this, by the first subsequent author to assign a gender to the name, is accepted.
A new combination or a replacement name is to be attributed to the author or authors of the publication in which it appears, even when it was ascribed to a different author or to different authors, when in the publication in which it appears their contribution is not explicitly acknowledged.
In determining the correct author citation, only internal evidence in the publication in which the name appears is to be accepted, including ascription of the name, statements in the introduction, title, or acknowledgements, and typographical distinctions in the text.

 What is a Citation Classic?
While the full bibliographic citation appears at the top of each commentary, as shown in the illustration of the Lowry commentary, authors did not consistently cite the original paper which would have provided the necessary link to the entry in WoS, and thereby permit you to directly obtain the up-to-date citation count.
The number of citations indicating a classic in botany, a small field, might be lower than the number required to make a classic in a large field like biochemistry.
authors were asked to write an abstract and a commentary about the publication, emphasizing the human side of the research - how the project was initiated, whether any obstacles were encountered, and why the work was highly cited.

Binomial nomenclature - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first term (genus name / generic name) is always capitalized, while the specific descriptor (in zoology, the "specific name", in botany, the "specific epithet") will not be, even when derived from a personal name.
The starting points, the time from which these Codes are in effect (retroactively), vary from group to group.
In botany the starting point will often be in 1753, in zoology in 1758.

They are calculated by dividing the number of current-year citations (for example, 1997) to a journal's papers published in the previous two years (that is, 1996 and 1995) by the combined total of these papers.
On the other hand, the assumption is that the impact of mathematics or botany journals is lower simply because there is less published in these smaller fields.
But citations to this vintage classic in no way influences JBC's current high impact, which is based on its previous two years' published papers, as noted previously.

This gives the percentage by which citation impact is altered, positively or negatively, by making the article OA (by self-archiving it in Arxiv).
Although it is unlikely that OA/non-OA citation differences should arise because of differences in self-citing patterns between self-archiving and non-self-archiving authors, self-citations are removed in Column 3.
