Topic: Autism and the Development of Mind

Theory of Mind in Autism: Development, Implications, and Intervention
Theory of mind development begins early in life, as does the shift from the typical course of development that is seen in children across the autism spectrum.
Antecedents to theory of mind development are evident in infancy.
While the peak in theory of mind development occurs in typical children from the age of 3 to 4, mental state understanding in individuals within the spectrum often continues to be conspicuously absent throughout the lifespan and leads to significant social and communicative challenges.

Peter Hobson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The core of his analysis is that human minds are the outcome of a successful series of interactions between infant and caregiver(s).
To achieve a rare vantage point on human development without unethical experimentation, Hobson examines cases of autism, Down's syndrome, congenital blindness and extreme social deprivation (for which statistically significant numbers of orphans rescued from Nicolae Ceauşescu's Romanian orphanages were available).
Hobson's argument constitutes a challenge to certain flavors of sociobiology and Evolutionary Psychology, in that it traces the conception of the human mind back to a 'cradle' of social interactions, without which consciousness in the full, human sense is unobtainable.

Autism: Current Issues 24 by Mike Connor
This is significant for the study of the nature of autism because many of the consistent differences between children with autism and either children with other forms of developmental delay or children showing no developmental anomalies are concerned with social-cognitive skills like joint attention, communication, and imitation.
Given a hypothesis (Rochat 1999) that joint attention is a precursor of theory of mind skills (which have been shown to correlate positively with executive function ability), it was planned to use this present study to seek clues concerning the role of executive function to the early development of theory of mind.
Autism specific prefrontal impairments may not be observable until the frontal lobe has developed to a greater level of maturity and when, in the absence of some neurological dysfunction, social processing is becoming established.

The term ‘theory of mind’ was coined by Premack and Woodruff, 1978 and is often used to refer to the ability to “attribute mental states and to use these invisible postulates to explain behaviour in everyday life.
This concept was subsequently identified by researchers in the field of autism as a possible absent ability that may be resulting in some of the manifest behaviours seen in children with autism.
The theory of mind hypothesis is increasingly being recognised as an explanatory cause for a large majority of deficits seen in Autism Spectrum Disorders.

ScienceDaily: Mother Is Just Another Face In The Crowd To Autistic Children
Unlike normally developing and mentally retarded children, autistic 3- and 4-year-olds do not react to a picture of their mother but do react when they see a picture of a familiar toy, a University of Washington psychologist has found.
It highlights that autism is a disorder of the social brain." Dawson said the idea that face recognition may be hard-wired, or something people are born with, is controversial.
Autism -- Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder that manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior.

Background: Autism is a condition manifesting in early childhood and characterized by marked abnormalities in communication and social interactions and a restricted and socially atypical range of interests.
Autism is not caused by a lack of warmth and affection in parents.
In particular, the development of autism after immunization to measles, mumps, and rubella led to the hypothesis that autism was caused by immunization.

Autism Society of America: Pervasive Development Disorder

TEACCH was developed at the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina as a structured teaching approach that used the child's visual and rote memory strengths to improve communication, social and coping skills.
The essential features of PDD-NOS are: severe and pervasive impairment in the development of reciprocal social interaction or verbal and nonverbal communication skills; stereotyped behaviors, interests, and activities; and the criteria for Autistic Disorder are not met because of late age onset, atypical and/or sub threshold symptomotology are present.

Autism and the Development of Mind - Word Power
Drawing upon philosophical writings as well as empirical research on autism, the author challenges the individualistic and cognitive bias of much developmental psychology, and argues that early human development is founded upon a normal infant's capacity for distinct forms of "I - Thou" and "I - It" relatedness.
To a large degree, autism may represent the psycho-pathological sequelae to biologically-based incapacities for social perception and interpersonal engagement.

From earliest infancy, a typically developing child imitates or mirrors the facial expressions, postures and gestures, and emotional behavior of others.
Topics include the neural and evolutionary bases of imitation, its pivotal connections to language development and relationships, and how early imitative deficits in autism might help explain the more overt social and communication problems of older children and adults.
The study of imitative development is currently a "hot" and very fertile area of research, demonstrated by an amazingly broad range of disciplinary sciences.
