Autism epidemic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The advent of a possible autism epidemic was first suggested in the mid-1990s by a handful of healthcare professionals who noticed sharp increases in the numbers being diagnosed and reported to public health agencies.
Thus, since autism is diagnosed strictly in terms of cognitive function, the rise in such diagnoses, associated with the many conditions comorbid to autism spectrum disorders, does not necessarily represent an epidemic, per se, based on the prevailing diagnostic criteria.

 The Autism Epidemic
Autism is an illness characterised by a lack of social and communicative ability and undue focus on stereotypical repetetive behaviour.
Autism was virtually unheard of before the 1940s, when Kanner first described the symptoms in a small group of children.
The cost of (very inadequate) care for each person with autism over their lifetime still runs to millions of pounds, to say nothing of the loss of their contribution to society as a whole.

 neurodiversity.com | the autistic distinction
Indeed, recognition of autism in a family member has a deep impact upon the entire family, and the challenges inherent in supporting people with challenging behavior are profound.
The revolution in the capacity of autistic citizens to communicate their experiences, needs and desires renders outmoded concepts of autism that focus only on incapacity rather than development and constructive adaptation through the lifespan, and that are based solely on observation of individuals who have been subject to lifelong professional scrutiny and speculative interpretation.
Autism is as much a part of humanity as is the capacity to dream.

 Autism Epidemic Reported
The DDS presented this epidemic report to the state legislature with a request that funds be authorized for a study by the University of California at Davis into the causes of autism and the increased number of cases.
The DDS report makes their conclusion on the basis that there were 11,995 autistic children enrolled in the department’s statewide programs during 1998, and that this number has increased 210% from the 3,864 enrolled in 1987.

Autism is a severely incapacitating developmental disability for which there is no known cure.
The report further revealed that "between Dec. 31, 1987, and Dec. 31, 2002, the population of persons with full-syndrome autism has increased by 634 percent." That is a doubling of autism cases every four years, and the staggering increases are not limited to California.
It is estimated that within the next four years autism cases in the Golden State will exceed the total number of cases of both cerebral palsy and epilepsy.

 The Rest of the Story
Much of the controversy has to do with two things: the notion that the incidence of autism is increasing, and the notion that mercury in vaccines has contributed to the increased incidence of the disorder.
The "autism epidemic," likewise, had led to an epidemic of writing -- most of it bad.
These include changes in diagnostic criteria for autism, with current criteria being more inclusive than when the diagnosis was first defined in the 1940s; methodological flaws in an unpublished California study widely cited as showing dramatically increased prevalence; and problems in using the U.S. Department of Education's annual "child count" data.

This massive broadening of the definition of autism, particularly at the milder end of the spectrum, is one of the main factors responsible for the rise in cases, says Eric Fombonne of McGill University in Montreal, Canada, a long-standing sceptic of the epidemic hypothesis.
Among autism campaigners these figures are often cited as incontrovertible and final proof of the existence of the autism epidemic.

The proponents of the 'epidemic' theory point to the 272.9% increase in number of individuals with typical autism registered for services in the state program between 1987 and 1998.
However, the cited "cohort" is a single cross-sectional slice of all ages during 1998 and cannot be reasonably compared to a birth cohort of uniform age.
In fact, the report underestimated the expected number of persons with autism (only 13,054 persons registered as of July 2000) compared to Fonbonne's estimate (using a prevalence estimate of about 22 per 10,000) showing 73,334 (all ages) and 21,940 (age 0-19 years).

 The Autism Epidemic Controversy
Although the California DDS update underscores the undeniable fact that many more individuals have autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) than previously believed, in my opinion it is still very difficult to determine to what extent these increases are due to changes in approaches to diagnosis and classification.
The proportion of individuals in the California DDS system with an autism classification and who did not have any indication of mental retardation has increased from 20 percent in 1987 to over 50 percent in December of 2002.
The prevalance of autism (including autistic disorder and pervasive developmental disorder - not otherwise specified) increased for each year of birth until 1991, then leveled off to about 2.6 per 1,000 live births.

The prevailing hypothesis that autism is a psychological disease rooted solely in genetics was debunked.
The cause for the epidemic might still be an issue, but such a revelation in the wake of all those denials is the jump-start that is needed to make other guardians of our healthcare system look at the very least foolish, and at the worst promoters of terrible propaganda.

The autism epidemic that never was   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
A far more obvious explanation for the increase in autism rates in California was the one that mainstream autism experts expounded: diagnostic changes, new laws that expanded federal payments to care for autistics, and greater parental awareness of these resources.
For example, 13 autism cases were reported per 10,000 Minnesota 6-year-olds in the 1995-96 school year—that is, among children born roughly in 1989.
Trying to pretend there is no increase in autism when so many patients and doctors disagree demonstrates that the so-called autism experts won't define what they claim autism is. I suppose they can next announce a cure for autism by declaring it doesn't exist.
