Cache Auto-config - Andamooka Reader   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The autoconfig file is actually a Java function, put in a file and served by your standard web server program.
Returns true if the first argument (normally specified as the variable host, which is defined in the autoconfig function by default) is in the domain specified in the second argument.
The main reason that autoconfig files were invented was the sheer number of possible cache setups.

AutoConfig   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
AutoConfig is a feature of Amiga computers which gives features similar to today's Plug and Play, although it was introduced in 1987 with the A1000, years before Windows 95.
When the computer is switched on, Kickstart (the Amiga equivalent of a BIOS) interrogates each expansion slot and automatically allocates each expansion card resources depending on what is installed in the slot.
In this way, the hardware was more constrained and designed for the Amiga rather than today's myriad manufacturers making PCI and AGP slots, however there were a number of companies creating expansions for Amigas.

Failure to gracefully shut down the domain operating environment before running autoconfig results in the unintended crashing of that domain, which in turn can result in data corruption.
Running autoconfig(1M) with no arguments causes autoconfig to be run against EVERY system board in the platform.

Autoconfig   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
This is very tedious and, in practice, it requires in-depth knowledge of the system to avoid conflicts among different cards used simultaneously.
AutoConfig was introduced with the Amiga 1000 in the year 1987, and automated this procedure totally, so that the user never had to bother with such details.
AutoConfig is, regarding to that, similar to Plug and Play in the sense of the word, although the mechanism is different.

#22847: Incorrect Syntax Using SSP Script `autoconfig sysboard n` Causes Global Arbstop   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Impact When runnning autoconfig on a system board `autoconfig sysboardn`, it is possible to mistakenly enter a space between "sysboard" and the number of the system board "n".
If this happens, autoconfig will run on the centerplane which will bring down the entire platform by causing the running domains to arbstop.
Symptoms If running the autoconfig command from the SSP for a given system board and the syntax is not correct, the result will be a "global Arbstop" on ALL running domains within the platform.

cgi generated autoconfig files - Andamooka Reader   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
A program could then generate an autoconfig script depending on the source address of the request.
Since the autconfig file is only loaded on startup (or when the autoconfig refresh button is pressed) the slight delay due to a cgi program would not be noticeable to the user.
Most large ISPs allocate subnets to regions, so a browser could be configured to access the nearest cache by looking at the source address of the request to the cgi program.

AutoConfig Branding Does Not Occur on Internet Explorer 5 for Unix
When you use an AutoConfig Uniform Resource Locator (URL) to apply customizations to Internet Explorer 5 on Sun Solaris for the Sparc platform, the Custom_config.cab file is downloaded but the entries in the file are not applied.
This problem occurs because the Custom_config.cab files that are smaller then 500 bytes in size are marked as invalid.
In addition, verify the size of the Custom_config.cab file before you implement the AutoConfig URL on Sun Solaris for the Sparc platform.

This would represent a problem howver for folks not familiar with the server and with distros that do not have this version of automake.

I would expect that the new protocol would either replace #3 or add a #4 and I would guess that the install script would include an autoconfig option and either select #1 or #4 but I mention these only to put in context the ID as I read it with how it might be used.
I don't see any need for the RFC which might result from this dealing with how individual implementations might be seen by the user except as setting the context for understanding the protocol.
