Autobahn is the German word for a major high-speed road usually linking one or more cities, similar to motorway or freeway in English-speaking countries.
Autobahns were first conceived, planned and built on a limited scale in Germany during the Weimar Republic era in the 1920s, but apart from the AVUS in Berlin, construction was slow, and most projected sections did not progress much beyond the planning stage due to economic problems and a lack of political support.
The German autobahns are famous for being some of the only public roads in the world without blanket speed limits for cars and motorcycles, though traffic on them is usually heavy enough to restrict speeds to little above the typical motorway speeds found elsewhere.

While Bowie, Pop, and Eno were creating albums that paved the way for electronic music, they were inspired by a group of German men who were making music that was less rock and more electronic-based that would not only also pave the way for electronic music but hip-hop as well.
The album would not only become a proto-type for the electronic music and synth-pop of the early 80s but other electronic music sub genres including the famed genre of hip-hop where its mechanized beats would become a prototype for sampled beats.
Though some of the tracks on the album have a length over five minutes seem pretentious at first; at that time, it was a new version of pretentiousness as the music found its way to show a sense of musical structures and flowing pop melodies.

After several early experimental albums, their breakthrough came in 1974 (1974 in music) with the Autobahn album and its 22-minute title track (you can hear a sample on the album's page), which was a worldwide hit and demonstrated their increasing reliance on synthesizers and electronics.

Although Kraftwerk's first three albums were groundbreaking in their own right, Autobahn is where the group's hypnotic electronic pulse genuinely came into its own.
The main difference between Autobahn and its predecessors is how it develops an insistent, propulsive pulse that makes the repeated rhythms and riffs of the shimmering electronic keyboards and trance-like guitars all the more hypnotizing.
Within Autobahn, the roots of electro-funk, ambient, and synth pop are all evident -- it's a pioneering album, even if its electronic trances might not capture the attention of all listeners.

Die Stimme der Energie: Toward an Interpretation of the Gesamtkunstwerk of Kraftwerk
In many ways, the 1974 album Autobahn is Kraftwerk’s breakthrough piece; the recording’s twenty-two-minute title track set the stage for much of the group’s later work, and acted as a kind of thematic and methodological manifesto—a foundation upon which subsequent undertakings were based.
Nevertheless, Autobahn succeeds as an album, and as a proving ground for future perspectives and techniques, its contribution is invaluable.
The second track, "Radioaktivität," was tellingly chosen as the song to be released before the album as a single; it effectively encapsulates much of the album’s philosophy, and serves to showcase the artists’ views succinctly.

Of course, Kraftwerk's pioneering use of the synthesizer in pop music is well-known, starting from their breakthrough 1974 "Autobahn" album and single, and then carrying on through the restless 1970s with continued success.
"Autobahn" was surprisingly placed in the middle of the set, though as a rather laid-back affair it didn't really have the energy as a closer or encore, so it made sense in the end.
It was kept to near 'single' length, and was not surprisingly accompanied by movies of highway traffic intermixed with the album art and the idealized roadsign symbol for Autobahn that is used here as well.
