In parallel with the Fiat models, the "500", platforms where clothed in prettier bodies by Autobianchi at their Desio factory.
Dante Giacosa's first front wheel drive car was the Autobianchi Primula.
Fiat had dealt with all the bugs associated with a new concept in the Primula and the 128 was a great success with one and a quarter million were produced by 1972.

The Autobianchi Primula was launched in 1964, around the same time as the Austin 1100.
The Primula was Fiats first attempt at a front wheel drive car however they didn't want to risk using the Fiat name in case it didn't take off.
Autobianchi was founded in 1955 by Fiat, Pirelli (the tyre company) and Bianchi (an old Italian car/truck company).

Autobianchi - WOI Encyclopedia Italia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Autobianchi was an Italian automobile manufacturer, it was created jointly by Bianchi, Pirelli and Fiat in 1957.
The most famous Autobianchi models include the A112, released in 1969, a small hatchback very popular in Italy for racing, and ended production in 1986, as well as the Y10, which was the first car to use Fiat's new FIRE (Fully Integrated Robotised Engine).
Autobianchi was bought by the Fiat group and integrated into Lancia, until the name had stopped usage when the Y10 was transfered to the latter's product line-up, in 1989.

The engine came from the ubiquitous Fiat 1100 (later versions used the 124's unit) and was mounted transversely, with the transmission end-on rather than in the sump as on the car's nearest British equivalent, the BMC 1100.
The Primula was designed by Dante Giacosa, an engineer of, arguably, equal talent to Mini-designer Alec Issigonis, and the man behind such mass-market classics as the Fiat Topolino and 600.
Delicately styled, the Primula was available in two-, three-, four- and five-door versions and as a nifty Touring-styled coupe.

Autobianchi Primula - WOI Encyclopedia Italia
The Autobianchi Primula was an automobile produced between 1964 and 1970.
Fiat, Autobianchi's parent company, created the Primula to test the public's perception on transverse engines front wheel drive cars.
With nearly 75,000 cars produced, Fiat was happy enough to experiment in this layout with the Fiat 128.

I must admit to not knowing anything about the Autobianchi A112.  What is so special about this little car?  Please enlighten me and expand my automotive knowledge.
Then, the A112 was a really clever and innovative compact car when it was launched in early 1970: together with the 1964 Primula, it pioneered the transverse engine/FWD layout for FIAT, previewing the hugely successful 127 launched in 1971...
It was one of the first cars with hatch and folding rear seats in Europe (the 127 was launched as a 2 door car and received the hatch just in 1972) and was the first proper attempt to offer a "luxury" supermini, if you except the Mini, that was meant to have a sportier elan...

 Bertone X1/9 Enthusiasts Website
The people at Bertone knew that Fiat was developing their first frontwheel drive cars, because Fiat had already tried the concept in the Autobianchi Primula.
So Bertone took the drive unit from the Autobianchi Primula, added the nearly finished new engine from the 128, and built a wild and beautiful open barchetta, and they called the prototype Autobianchi A112 Runabout.
The X1/4 became the 903 ccm 127 (same driveline as X1/2, the Autobianchi A112, and same engine as in the 850 sport spider) in 1971.

Here we see Harry Webster pictured with a design proposal for a medium-sized saloon.
The car bears a strong overall resemblance to the Autobianchi Primula, but it is probably larger, and it differs from the Primula in various design details (most notably the latter car's front quarterlights, squared-off rear wheel-arches and lack of buttresses around the rear-window).
It is not known when the photograph was taken, but it is likely that it pre-dates Webster's arrival at BMC by some years.

 Desio
The 1st Autobianchi Register meeting was held on Sunday 12th May 2002 at Desio Italy - the town where the Autobianchi factory was situated and all Autobianchis and therefore A112s were made.
There were quite a few cars - about 80 in all - made up of 50% A112s and 50% Bianchinas with a Primula thrown in for good measure.
The cars (and thus the people!) came from all over Italy and congrageted in the piazza outside the main church of Desio for the usual Benediction by the priest.

Much of the delay was caused by reservations about the acceptability of small to mid range saloons with front wheel drive to the Italian home market.
Fiat had tested the market by launching the Autobianchi Primula a few years earlier with the same engine configuration.
So with production and market lessons learned, and many of the other European manufacturers also exploiting the cost advantages possible with transverse engine layouts, Fiat produced the 128 saloon.

In the 1960's Fiat and Simca raced to fix this problem and come up with a truly modern front-drive car.
Fiat got there first with the Autobianchi Primula, but the Primula was never a success and wasn't popular even in it's native Italy.
Simca, in the end, won the race with the 1100.
