Autofocus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first mass-produced autofocus camera was the Konica C35 AF, a simple point and shoot model released in 1977.
The Polaroid SX-70 was the first autofocus Single-lens reflex camera, released in 1978.
The Minolta Maxxum 7000, released in 1985, was the first SLR with an integrated autofocus system, meaning both the AF sensors and the drive motor were housed in the camera body.

Canon T80 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The autofocus system in the T80 worked in the same manner as the focus assist system built into the earlier AL-1.
The autofocus lenses contained a motor, and electrical contacts in the lens mount connected this motor to the camera's circuits.
Except for its autofocus capability, the T80 was very similar to the earlier T70, with four programmed scene modes in addition to regular Program auto-exposure (AE).

AutoFocus is a traffic analysis and visualization tool that describes the traffic mix of a link through textual reports and time series plots.
Both types of input can be sampled, but AutoFocus only compensates for the sampling in the reports that measure the traffic in bytes and packets, and not in those measuring the traffic in flows (to avoid giving biased estimates).
AutoFocus is available for commercial use under copyright license from The Regents of the University of California.

 1Ds Autofocus Tips
The 45-point autofocus system of the 1Ds is fast and usually accurate, but at times it will lock focus on something other than the intended center of focus, especially if there is an obstruction in front of the main subject.
In that situation, autofocus can still be used, but it needs to be limited to a single focus sensor so that the camera knows exactly what the intended subject is. In other situations, manual focus may be necessary to achieve the desired effect.
Not having autofocus tied to the shutter button takes a little getting used to, but the control and flexibility it offers is well worth the time it takes to learn.

Autofocus cameras had a common problem (for pros): they did not focus quickly and accurately in all situations.
Autofocus can also be used, selectively, to draw attention to specific areas of a scene for more creative pictures.
If you leave autofocus turned on, your camera may focus behind the child (if he or she is not in the center of the frame); or the camera may "freeze" when it can't find the fast-moving focus point, which will result in a missed picture.

Ed Robinson - Autofocus cameras underwater - Exploring the Nikon 8008&N90
First was to use autofocus to help me focus faster as I scramble to capture humpback whales breach at unpredictable distances from the boat.
The problem with autofocus is that it needs to see the lines or patterns in the subject, and it needs to be close enough to the correct focus to even see the subject.
I also feel autofocus should be limited to normal and telephoto lenses (35mm and up.) Wide angle lenses do not have the critical focus problems of longer lenses, and it is common to place the main subject in wide angle pictures off center, which will throw the subject focus off.

In autofocus mode the camera automatically focuses on the subject in the focus area in the center of the LCD/viewfinder.
Many prosumer and all professional digital cameras allow you to select additional autofocus areas which are indicated on the LCD/viewfinder.
Autofocus is usually based on detecting contrast and therefore works best on contrasty subjects and less well in low light conditions, in which case the use of an AF assist lamp is very useful.

 Howstuffworks "How Autofocus Cameras Work"
Passive autofocus, commonly found on single-lens reflex (SLR) autofocus cameras, determines the distance to the subject by computer analysis of the image itself.
There is no distance-to-subject limitation with passive autofocus like there is with the infrared beam of an active autofocus system.
When you hold the camera in the horizontal position, the passive autofocus system will have a hard time with a boat on the horizon but no problem with a flagpole or any other vertical detail.

It would probably be a fl eye for them to throw a second rate autofocus system on what they consider "world class" cameras.
Some say that one of the reason's Contax held out on auto-focus was because they felt that the high precision optics would be defeated by the loose tolerances needed for an auto focus system.
And I think that they probably don't think that licensing it from someone else will be compelling for their customer base - because it would result in a system with the mechanical feel that's the same as whomever they've licensed - and their customers wouldn't buy it.

Using an autofocus camera with central AF sensor(s) on a tripod is a potential pain in the neck, due to the need to center the subject to focus, then move off to compose the shot (e.g., rule of thirds).
Autofocus systems also have problems at apertures above f/4 on many cameras, and above f/5.6 on most AF cameras is problematic with low contrast subjects in dim light too.
Autofocus is just an automated split image rangefinder with all the same problems as focusing by eye, with the added liabilities of being less sensitive and accurate than manual focusing.

 Autofocus troubleshooting by Thom Hogan
It seems a lot of folk have been reporting autofocus problems on the forums lately (very few of which turn out to be real component failures), so I'm going to provide you a troubleshooting checklist to run through before you run off screaming to the manufacturer.
Read the autofocus sections in my books (or the extended discussions I've produced in Nikon Digital SLR Report) carefully--many settings interact and not all autofocus sensors are equal.
Then it's possible that the autofocus sensor positions are slightly off from where they should be and the camera needs to go back to Nikon for adjustment (send the photos you shot!).

Dan Heller's Movie Review of "Autofocus"
Paul Schrader's film, Autofocus, is the story of Bob Crane (played by Greg Kinnear), who had the title character in the hit TV series, "Hogan's Heroes" in the late 1960's.
The interesting thing about the real-life story of Bob Crane is the fact that he was brutally murdered in 1978 by a killer who was never convicted, even though everyone knew who it was.
If the movie were supposed to be just a portrait of man, it should have expanded on other sides of Crane to flesh him out as a complete character.

The Nikon D2x has a total of 11 autofocus sensors, as represented by the brackets in the viewfinder.
Since there is no contrast in a blank wall, the autofocus will simply rack in and out and be unable to focus.
You will find that autofocus happens well outside of each bracket, and reveals the true width of the AF sensor on your camera.

The autofocus system is fast (especially on central subjects), and features five sensors (CAM 900) that can track rapidly moving objects, or direct autofocus to a specific area of the frame.

Most photographers are perfectly happy to use the simplest autofocus setting, “Single Area AF.” With this setting your camera locks on to slow moving and static subjects using a single focus area of the eleven available in the D2x.
The camera's autofocus system is contrast based, and if contrast gets weak, or everything is of similar contrast, autofocus does not work well.
