Toyota Takes Position as Number One Automaker - Auto News Feature - Motor Trend
Toyota made $3.2 billion in the last quarter, a bit less in dollars than the loss GM recorded (which was mostly the result of paying off workers who took early retirement to help the automaker cut employment levels).
And now that Toyota has passed Ford as the number-two automaker in America (for one month, at least) and analysts are predicting it could pass GM for first place worldwide this year, it's suffering some bad publicity, kind of like Wal-Mart about the time it passed Sears as the nation's number-one retailer.
No matter what their rankings, the Big Three or four or five automakers playing in the U.S. had better get used to the idea that no one company will hold as much as 20-percent market share here.
