Automatic gain control - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The AGC circuit keeps the receiver in its linear operating range by measuring the overall strength of the signal and automatically adjusting the gain of the receiver to maintain a constant level of output.
It is usually not advantageous to reduce the gain of the front end of the receiver on weak signals, to maximise signal to noise ratio, and keep the first stage in the linear range for blocking rejection.
AGC is also found in many types of tape recorder, including basic cassette decks and VCRs, the object being to record to tape a good quality signal but one that does not saturate the tape and cause distortion and other problems, even if the signal to be recorded varies in level.

Automatic gain control circuit - Patent 6512554
Further, the AGC voltage outputted from the detector 24 is to be inputted to the AGC voltage input terminal 21b of the tuner 21 through an automatic gain control voltage selector switch (hereinafter called "AGC voltage selector switch") 26.
As a result, the amplification of the gain variable amplifier 1c of the tuner 1 is lowered to thereby amplify the input analog broadcast signal smaller, whereby the level of the IF signal outputted from the gain variable amplifier 1c of the tuner 1 and inputted to the demodulator 5 is kept constant.
The first control voltage is inputted to the other end of the first resistor and the second control voltage is inputted to the base of the transistor, whereby the automatic gain control voltage is outputted from the collector of the transistor.

This is achieved by controlling amplifier gain using a coupled linear detector to rectify the RF signal and amplify the detected signal, using one or more operational amplifiers to provide the appropriate DC-control voltage.
AGC measurement is taken from the same setup and is measured from the point before the RF envelope begins to fall outside the specified output power variation to the point of no signal.
Gain control range can be measured using either a swept or CW source and the appropriate power-measuring device.

Thus, the function of the control loop is to maintain the average value of S.sub.1, the AGC output, at a constant value equal to the parameter k.sub.1 as the average value of the input, S.sub.o, varies over a large range.
The control is accomplished by having the error between the average value of S.sub.1 and the desired k.sub.1 drive an accumulator (28, 29).
The absolute value of the accumulator output is the gain control parameter, G. The action of the control loop is for the accumulator to change until a value of G is reached such that the average of S.sub.1 is equal to k.sub.1.

In a first mode, in which the erased portion of a sector is being detected, the AGC multiplexer couples an input preset signal of a predetermined voltage level to the AGC circuit, enabling it, in turn, to generate a gain control signal to control the gain to a predetermined level.
In a second mode, the AGC multiplexer couples a signal related to the output signal from the amplifier to the AGC circuit, enabling the AGC circuit to generate a gain signal related to the output level of the amplifier.
In the third mode, the AGC multiplexer maintains its output signal constant, thus enabling the AGC circuit to maintain its gain control constant.

Automatic gain control or AGC does the job by setting receiver gain to be inversely proportional to input level.
Placing the digital gain boost inside the AGC loop assures that a constant peak output level will be maintained even in the face of minor variations in analog gain control.
Digital AGC copes with that by detecting older signals and applying the gain change to more-recent signals before they are output.

For AGC, which tends to take a longer term view of the world compared to a peak limiter, the length of the buffer would need to be seconds rather than ms.

However, if the automatic gain control is ON, then it will boost the sound of the rain when the person pauses--because automatic gain control always wants something to be full volume.
In that quiet moment, the automatic gain control will hunt for whatever sound it can find--say the humming air conditioner--and bring up that sound to "healthy" levels.
The bottom line is that it is OK to use automatic gain when you are learning--with the understanding that at some point, you'll need to give it up and learn to control levels manually.
