 NTSB - Abstract MAB-9801
An automatic smoke alarm that would sound within crew accommodation areas when smoke is detected would offer crewmembers immediate warning of the presence of smoke and allow the maximum available escape time during a fire.
The lack of a smoke detector in the storeroom to detect the fire early and the lack of an automatic local-sounding smoke alarm in the crew area probably contributed to the crew fatality.
The immediate suppression response provided by an automatic sprinkler system would have extinguished the flames early, reduced the amount of smoke that developed, and cooled the fire area, thus enabling early entry by the backup fire parties.

VPC - Bullet Hoses - The Gun Industry's Lies
And even if automatic fire were more deadly, many semiautomatic assault weapons not only can be converted to automatic fire with home tools and modest skill, but readily available books and videos walk the would-be converter through the process.
The red herring of the automatic fire "issue" was raised by the gun lobby only after civilian assault weapons were widely criticized.
Military assault weapons, like the M-16 shown above, have a "selective fire" switch to change the mode of fire from semiautomatic to automatic (machine gun).

Semi-automatic pistol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A semi-automatic will fire only one shot per trigger pull, in contrast to a "fully automatic" which continues to fire as long as the trigger is held back or until all rounds have been fired.
It is generally handgun that can fire semi-automatic by automatically reloading stored rounds into the firing chamber.
A self-loading pistol reloads the chamber with a new round automatically each time the weapon is fired, without additional action by the user.

It makes on sense to ban a semi-automatic weapon with a pistol grip and a bayonet lug when a semi-automatic without these features are legal.

Modern Firearms - FG-42 automatic rifle
It must be noted that the HWaA (Army department of armaments) was quite reluctant about feasibility of the selective-fire full power rifle; at that time Army seriously suggested the intermediate 7.92x33 Kurtz cartridge and much more reasonable Mkb.42 automatic carbines, which later evolved into Stg.44 assault rifle.
This had to be a selective fire, lightweight rifle, firing the standard issue 7.92x57mm ammunition, and capable of controllable full automatic fire, as well as accurate single shot semi-automatic fire.
At the start of the WW2 Fallshirmjagers (paratroopers) were armed with standard issue small arms, most notably P.08 and P.38 pistols, Kar.98k bolt-action rifles, MP-38 and MP-40 submachine guns and MG.34 general-purpose machine guns.

Selective fire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Selective fire weapons almost always have a semi-automatic mode, where the weapon automatically reloads the chamber after each round is fired, but requires that the trigger be pulled again before firing the next round.
Some selective fire weapons offer a burst mode as the second option, where each pull of the trigger automatically fires a predetermined number of rounds, but won't fire any more until the trigger is pulled again.
In some cases the selection is between different rates of automatic fire.

 Fire Sprinkler History
As was expected, the advent of the Automatic Sprinkler attracted the attention of Fire Engineers who had hitherto been engaged in the manufacture of non-automatic appliances, and in the succeeding years there appeared on the British market numerous types of new Sprinklers, each claiming to be an improvement on Mr Grinnell's invention.
Whatever may be the case today I do not think so high a rebate was justified 35 years ago, having regard to our then limited experience of the incidence of the Automatic Sprinkler on the fire loss ratio.
Of the many devices submitted for examination three British Sprinklers were deemed of sufficient merit to justify their endorsement, viz.: the "Simplex" (Dowson and Taylor, Bolton), the "Witter" (Witter and Son, Bolton), and the "Titan" (J H Lynde and George Mills, Radcliffe).

HKPRO: The Mechanics of H&K NFA Conversions
The fire control selector switch is identical in both semi-auto and selective fire variants of the guns, and is merely prevented from moving into the full-automatic selected position in the semi-auto trigger groups by a mechanical detent formed into the exterior of the trigger housing.
Removing the automatic sear removed one level of mechanical safety, as it is always functional whether or not the fire control selector is in the cyclic fire mode.
With the deletion of the automatic sear and its’ pivot pin position, the select fire trigger pack frame could be altered to mount on the newly designed clip-on receiver mounting ledge.

Semi automatic weapons can fire up to the usual number of shots in a single action and full auto weapons can fire up to their maximum full auto value.
Weapons may also fire at targets up to twice as far as their long range (known as extreme range), but the probability of success is halved after all other modifiers are applied.
This is usually either single shot (single), semi-automatic (semi-auto) or fully automatic (full auto).

Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW), M249 Light Machine Gun
The Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) is an air-cooled, belt-fed, gas-operated automatic weapon that fires from the open-bolt position.
Background: The SAW was developed through an initially Army-led research and development effort and eventually a Joint NDO program in the late 1970s/early 1980s to restore sustained and accurate automatic weapons fire to the fire team and squad.
Fielded in the mid-1980s, the SAWS filled the void created by the retirement of the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) during the 1950s because interim automatic weapons (M14 Series/M16A1 Rifles) had failed as viable "base of fire" weapons.

Semi-automatic rifle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is distinguished from a fully automatic rifle in that it can only fire once each time the trigger is pulled.
A semi-automatic rifle is a type of rifle that, each time the trigger is pulled, fires a single bullet without the need to operate a bolt or other firing or loading mechanism other than the trigger, until the firearm's supply of cartridges is depleted.
For example, it is possible in the U.S. to purchase a semi-automatic M60 machine gun, but the internals are extensively modifed to the point new parts and expert machining would be needed to convert it to fully automatic fire.
