Automatic For the People is not as perfect as the REM record it most reminds me of, Life Rich Pageant, which is also generally low key but tuneful.

R.E.M.’s Automatic for the People (1992) was their 8th studio album release and is to this date one of their most successful, selling over four million copies.
Far from an upbeat album, it has its moments of sunshiny goodness: “Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight” is bouncy and bright (although it does tend to push Stipe to the limit of his vocal range), and the famous tribute to Andy Kaufman “Man on the Moon”; is a bit more upbeat and well-received.
People often see REM as depressing so it nice to know that they do have up beat songs even if they talk about death….a lot.

Automatic For the People still has excellent songs in it, but I don't really enjoy listening to it.
AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE is my favourite R.E.M. album (loosely tied with LIFES RICH PAGEANT), not to mention, IMO, one of the best albums of the 90's (up there with OK COMPUTER by Radiohead).
There is a kind of dark, serene beauty to AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE, sad yet slightly hopefull at the same time.

Automatic for the People was my first REM album and I actually wore my first copy out:rolleyes:.
Except that when I was 13 it was the suicide of someone in the family, and I didn't actually own Automatic For The People until two years later.
I can't say that it was Automatic For The People that triggered the turning point to getting my life back on track because there were other people on the scene who helped me a lot.
