Automobile self starter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The modern starter motor is a series-wound direct current electric motor with a solenoid switch (similar to a relay) mounted on it.
This allowed lower current to be drawn from the battery to run the starter, and still had the initial torque needed to turn the flywheel approximately at 200 rpm.
This starter is also smaller and integrates the starter solenoid in the starter case, instead of having it mounted externally.

Operated from self generated air pressure, this type of starter was particularly suitable for application on engines of small output where an electrical installation was not possible and manual hand-cranking undesirable and inadequate.
The principle of operation of the air injection starter is as follows: The engine is cranked from an initial air pressure of approximately 450 pounds per square inch, which is contained in a storage tank.
The starter may be operated as a direct cranking electric starter or as a combination, direct cranking electric and inertia starter, by means of the control switch, as required.

A need for patent protection, common technical design problems, and the development of engineering standards was quickly emerging, however, and many engineers in the automobile business expressed a desire to have "free exchange of ideas" in order to expand their individual technical knowledge base.
Heldt wrote an editorial in June of 1902 in which he said, "Now there is a noticeable tendency for automobile manufacturers to follow certain accepted lines of construction, technical questions constantly arise which seek solution from the cooperation of the technical men connected with the industry.
The Society of Automobile Engineers became the Society of Automotive Engineers, and the most important chapter in the SAE saga was underway.

In more than 100 years of evolution of the automobile, the times we live in today - at the start of a new century - may ultimately take the form of a true “sequel to the beginning” in a larger story of transportation history.
These two advantages were afforded by the ingenious application of what the electric starter's creator - Charles “Boss” Kettering - had learned from his prior work at the National Cash Register Co. It was Kettering's earlier miniaturization of an efficient electric motor that enabled cash registers to transition from hand-cranking to electric-cranking.

The "self starter" had powerful and lasting effects on the car business because, for the first time, the Model T was truly accessible to women.
Newspaper and magazine writers had tried to down play the difficulties of using the handcrank, by claiming "It's a knack rather than a matter of strength." But the fact was, it was almost impossible for a woman to start a Ford.
One of the selling points of Kettering's "self starter" was a story he told often about a friend who gallantly came to the rescue of a lady with a stalled car and had shattered his shoulder as he attempted to crank the car back to life.
