Automotive navigation system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An automotive navigation system is a satellite navigation system designed for use in automobiles.
This analog system used an accelerometer to judge location, as the GPS system was not yet generally available.
Some navigation devices (map software) also store the location of known speed traps on its map database, and can alert the driver in much the same way as a radar detector as he approaches a speed trap.

Systems that are intended to have a high degree of human interaction are usually referred to as a navigation system.
An inertial guidance system consists of an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) combined with control mechanisms, allowing the path of a vehicle to be controlled according to the position determined by the inertial navigation system.
An inertial navigation system (INS) provides the position, velocities and attitude of a vehicle by measuring the accelerations and rotations applied to the system's inertial frame.

PC Today Article - Automotive Navigation Systems   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Automotive navigation systems are making the driving experience all over the world a little less stressful.
In general, navigation systems compare GPS signals with maps that are stored either on a DVD or on a device’s hard drive to create a visual map of your best route and current location.
Though those devices are based on the same technology as automotive navigation systems and are made by some of the same manufacturers, such as well-known Magellan and Garmin (www.garmin.com), in-car navigation systems can have features that are quite different.

Kivera Launches Bluetooth-Enabled Vehicle Navigation System
Eliminating the need for bulky in-vehicle navigation units and costly dedicated wireless subscriptions, the Kivera system utilizes the end-user's existing wireless account, freeing automotive manufacturers from the drawbacks typically associated with in-vehicle navigation systems and giving mobile operators a new service offering from which to draw revenues.
With the Kivera Bluetooth-enabled vehicle navigation system, auto manufacturers are able to deploy an advanced telematics solution, unencumbered by separate charges to the end user.
The Kivera-powered vehicle navigation system then establishes a connection with the end-user's Bluetooth-enabled wireless device, contacting a Kivera Traffic Server and downloading the information requested, along with a map of the vehicle's general area, and traffic conditions specific to the vehicle's location.

North American Automotive and Consumer GPS Navigation System Markets
North America has been slower to adopt navigation systems than other parts of the world because the road networks are relatively well laid out and do not change names for many miles, thereby making navigation systems redundant.
Incorporation of real-time information systems, advances in data transmissibility, and continuous innovation in GPS and associated technologies are expected to provide a launch pad for GPS products into automotive, marine, and outdoor recreation industries.
Meanwhile, integrated infotainment systems that provide improved performances at low prices also result in enhanced value-price ratio of navigation systems, thereby increasing their uptake.
