Terminal ganglia, or intramural ganglia, are so named because of their close proximity to effector organs and glands.

At the nicotinic receptors in ganglia and at the myoneural junction the accumulation of acetylcholine at first leads to an intensification of cholinergic transmission, but with continued accumulation over time, the nicotinic receptors become desensitized.

Preganglionic nerves leave the spinal cord with spinal nerve trunks and project to post-ganglionic neurons whose cell bodies are in the autonomic ganglia.
In the generalized pattern of chemical synapses of the autonomic system with effector (target) tissues, the pre-synaptic terminal may exhibit an enlarged "axon varicosity." This means the axon has many fine terminals branching out to the surface of the target organ in the region of innervation.
