An autonomous region or autonomous district is a subnational region with special powers of self-rule.
Except for special administrative regions which are considered dependent territories, all of these autonomous divisions are designated for one or more ethnic minorities.
In Portugal, the two island regions of Azores and Madeira became autonomous regions in 1976 with self-rule by a regional government and a regional legislative assembly.

The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) of the Philippines is composed of five provinces and one city namely: Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi and the Marawi City.
Cotabato City is the regional center and the seat of the ARMM regional government, but the city itself is part of Region XII.
The region was first created on August 1, 1989 through Republic Act No. 6734 otherwise known as the Organic Act.
