An autonomous building is a building designed to be operated independently from infrastructual support services such as the electric power power grid, municipal water systems, sewage treatment systems, storm drains, communication services, and (in some cases) public roads.
Autonomous buildings are usually energy-efficient in operation, and therefore cost-efficient, for the obvious reason that smaller energy needs are easier to satisfy off-grid.
Autonomous building is an idea of western civilization in the 20th century.

The Autosub, a torpedo-like autonomous underwater vehicle, will venture beneath icebergs and the floating margin of Kangerlussuaq Glacier with a set of scientific instruments.
The vehicle is programmed to take a given course, and is 'intelligent' in that it can react to and avoid obstructions, such as the unexpected presence of icebergs.
The Space Technology 6 Autonomous Sciencecraft Experiment, recently developed by NASA for monitoring volcanoes and other remote "threats", discovered a new eruption on Erebus and NASA has quickly reprogrammed the spacecraft for a repeat observation.
