In Portugal, a municipality (município) is subdivision of a district (distritos).
In South Africa, district municipalities and metropolitan municipalities are subdivisions of the provinces, and local municipalities are subdivisions of district municipalities.
Although it is a part of a district (distrito) for certain national administrative purposes, the municipality is not subordinate to the district and decentralization is doing away with the districts.

The District Council has a Chairman and a Deputy Chairman who are elected by the members of the Council in accordance with the provisions of the Assam Autonomous Districts (Constitution of District Councils) Rules,1951.The Deputy Commissioner functions as the Returning Officer in respect of the elections to Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council.

The Administrator shall, by order, determine-- (a) the constituencies (which shall be single member constituencies) into which an autonomous district shall be divided for the purpose of election of members to the District Council of that district; and (b) the extent of each constituency.

 Chukotka govt. denies district`s bankruptcy - Russian News - News From Russia
May 23 (Interfax) - The government of the Chukotka autonomous district has denied allegations that the district has gone bankrupt and said that it is still capable of paying off its debt to the state.
The document quotes the district's first deputy governor, Andrei Gorodilov, as saying that "Chukotka's state debt exceeded its budget revenues by 14 times in 2000, but this figure now stands at only 2.3 times." The Chukotka government also criticized the Audit Chamber's auditor, Sergei Ryabukhin, who handled the district's latest audit.
Ryabukhin said on May 21 that the results of the Audit Chamber's check suggested that the Chukotka autonomous district had effectively gone bankrupt since its state debt was more than two times its own budget revenues.

The CHUKCHIS (Luoravetlan) consist of 15,000 people who speak the Chukchi language of the Chukchi-Kamchatka (Paleoasiatic) language family and live in northeastern Russia, within the boundaries of the Chukchi Autonomous District of the Magadan region, north of the Koryak Autonomous District of the Nizhnekolymskii (lower Kolyma) region of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia).
They live throughout the entire territory of the Koryak Autonomous District and in the Bystrinsky District of the Kamchatka region on the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk in the Magadan region.
