Exploring Autonomous System Numbers-The Internet Protocol Journal - Volume 9, Number 1 - Cisco Systems
The domain is in effect an autonomous unit in the overall routing architecture, and is termed an Autonomous System (AS).
The left-most number in the AS path list is the ASN of the adjacent AS from which the address prefix advertisement was received.
The ASN of the aggregating AS is attached to the aggregate prefix advertisement as an AGGREGATOR attribute.

Autonomous system (Internet) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the Internet, an autonomous system (AS) is a collection of IP networks and routers, under the control of one or more entities, that presents a common routing policy to the Internet.
A unique AS number (or ASN) is allocated to each AS for use in BGP routing.
Autonomous Systems can be grouped into 3 categories, depending on their connections and operation.

This document provides a description of Autonomous System Numbers, their assignment procedures and guidelines on how to obtain them in RIPE NCC service region.
An Autonomous System (AS) is a group of IP networks run by one or more network operators with a single, clearly defined routing policy.
If an organisation has an AS Number that is no longer in use, it can be returned to the public pool of AS Numbers by sending a message to hostmaster@ripe.net.

An Autonomous System Number (AS) is a set of routers under a single technical administration, using an interior gateway protocol and an exterior gateway protocol to route packets to other ASs.
Sometimes, the term AS is misunderstood and used for grouping together a set of prefixes which belong under the same administrative umbrella.

RFC 3065 (rfc3065) - Autonomous System Confederations for BGP
This document describes an extension to BGP which may be used to create a confederation of autonomous systems that is represented as a single autonomous system to BGP peers external to the confederation, thereby removing the "full mesh" requirement.
Subdividing a large autonomous system allows a significant reduction in the total number of intra-domain BGP connections, as the connectivity requirements simplify to the model used for inter-domain connections.
However, there is usually no need to expose the internal topology of this divided autonomous system, which means it is possible to regard a collection of autonomous systems under a common administration as a single entity or autonomous system when viewed from outside the confines of the confederation of autonomous systems itself.

Autonomous system source routes When a system is processing a SRE with an Address Family indicating an AS source route, it MUST use the SRE Offset field to determine the next autonomous system.
If the next autonomous system is the local autonomous system, the SRE Offset field should be increased by two (the size of an autonomous system number).
Otherwise, the system should use the autonomous system number indicated by the SRE Offset field to replace the destination address in the delivery header and forward the packet.

On the Internet, an autonomous system (AS) is the unit of router policy, either a single network or a group of networks that is controlled by a common network administrator (or group of administrators) on behalf of a single administrative entity (such as a university, a business enterprise, or a business division).
An autonomous system is also sometimes referred to as a routing domain.

 Autonomous System Number Report
Any individual AS number can be in any one of four states: part of the IANA unallocated number pool, part of the unassigned pool held by an RIR, assigned to an end user entity but not advertised in the routing system, and assigned and advertised in BGP.
The technique used here is to use recent AS number consumption data in a time series, apply a best fit to the data using a least squares best fit, and then using the derived slope and intercept to generate a predictive trend line.
Using this exponential trend model of advertised AS number growth and a linear trend model of the ratio of unadvertised to advertised AS numbers, it is now possible to model each RIR's projected AS allocation rate and then look at the predicted behaviour of the RIR pool size for each RIR.

 Sprintlink FAQ's - BGP
A prefix is composed of a path of AS numbers, indicating which networks the packet must pass through, and the IP block that is being routed, so a BGP prefix would look something like: 701 1239 42 206.24.
To set up BGP, you need a router capable of running BGP (a Cisco router with 10.3 or later IOS will do), an Autonomous System Number from ARIN, and you must also be multi-homed.
An autonomous system is one network or series of networks that are all under one administrative control.
