Auto Train - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
The company used its own locomotives, passenger railcars, autoracks, and cabooses, and used the tracks of the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac (RFandP) and Seaboard Coast Line (SCL) railroads from Lorton, Virginia to Sanford, Florida.
The bilevel autoracks were augmented by trilevel ones that were purchased new in 1976.
In the mid 1990s, Amtrak replaced all these passenger railcars, which were of the conventional single-level type, with its newer, bilevel Superliner I and II equipment.

Autoracks today are basically TOFC 89 foot pig flats with a structural addition.(there are JTTX flats out there in service today that are cut down from auto racks)...
A cut of autorack cars was often referred to as a "portable wall" when stored in a yard or backtrack because you cannot see around or get around them easily.
I soon learned not to use the name autorack as it is used mostly by railfans.

The CN autoracks cars were a big success and helped lead to the development of today's enclosed autoracks.
The former CN auto-racks were augmented by new tri-level autoracks in 1976.
The typical train varied from 30 to 64 cars, pulled by with two or three locomotives, and included 76' double-deck autoracks, a number of streamlined passenger cars including coaches, 85' dome cars, dining cars, sleepers, and a caboose necessitated by the string of auto carriers attatched to the rear of the train.

 Autoracks
These enclosed autoracks are prevalent today, making up a large percentage of the freight cars roaming the rails today.
The enclosed part of the autorack is owned by a specific railroad, for example, the UP We Will Deliver autoracks are owned by the Union Pacific Railroad.
For now, I will list only autoracks that are part of the TTX pool, and work into the autoracks owned completly by a Railroad.

 Autorack Tri-Level Photos: Conrail Cyclopedia
In order to avoid clearance problems, the flatcar is a special low-level design, which can be identified by the cut-outs in the side-sill to allow the trucks to swing out.
Unlike other autoracks, which have the usual 33" wheels, these cars are equipped with smaller 28" wheels, which lower the car even more.
This is the standard tri-level autorack painted in the older Trailer Train logo.

Actually, all autoracks are owned by TTX Company, which in turn is owned by various railroads across North America.
Of course, the autoracks were still unprotected on the top and side, though only partially protected on the sides.
Without going into a detailed history of TTX or autoracks, which can be found elsewhere as mentioned on the Autorack Reference page, I would like to briefly mention the development of autorack design from the 1960s until the present.

Both MT and RC autoracks are very nicely done, but I would give the edge to the RC cars.
The Con Cor cars are nice for the price, but when you put one next to a MT and the wife says "that one looks plasticy", while pointing at the CC car, I think even the three foot rule gets thrown out the window.
I have both The MT autoracks and the RC ones and have found that the RC racks, for me at least, tend to track better.

The purpose of this page is to help modelers accurately model 89-foot autoracks in both HO and N scales.
It's important to note, that as a general rule, railroad autoracks are not placed on TTX Company flat cars in series or sequential order.
Therefore the flat car numbers for any one railroad's autoracks are spread all over TTX's 89-foot flat car numbering spectrum.
