At least 25,000 CNG-run autorickshaws are in abundance in Dhaka, although the government's target was to allow maximum of only 13,000, the minister told a meeting of the parliamentary standing committee on communications ministry, sources said.
Members of the parliamentary body alleged that price of a CNG autorickshaw had gone up to as high as Tk 3.67 lakh while the actual price was Tk 1.67 lakh as a result of a monopoly on imports by Uttara Motors.
Two sub-committees were formed to probe into the alleged irregularities of the importing of CNG autorickshaws and the issuing of licences, and in the allocation of land to set up CNG refuelling stations.

 [No title]
Autorickshaws have three wheels, two in the back and one in front, one driver's seat in front, and a seat that can hold two or three in the back.
Steering an autorickshaw is accomplished through the handlebars mounted in front of the driver, almost exactly like a motorcycle or scooter.
All models of autorickshaws have no starter motor; the driver either uses a pedal or a hand lever located to the left of the engine to get it turning, much like a lawnmower uses (except that they don't have gas-powered lawnmowers in India).

I was living in India for six months, and decided to make a piece about autorickshaws, which are the only way to get anywhere easily and cheaply in New Delhi.
Unfortunately, while I was there, there were several autorickshaw strikes (the drivers were indignant at being asked to stop ripping people off).
I also got some of the worst colds of my life sitting in the back of autorickshaws, with the winter wind in my face and breathing enough diesel exhaust to last several lifetimes.

The increasing presence of autorickshaws in the city was towards fulfilling the huge gap in the local transport service and growing needs of a sizeable population for an economical and faster mode of local transport.
It is not uncommon to see an autorickshaw picking or dropping passengers in the middle of the road, right at an intersection, jumping traffic lights and changing lanes with total disregard to the inconvenience caused to other road users and holding up traffic.
Though autorickshaw operators are not solely at fault since there are hardly any designated stands for them, but parking of three-wheelers indiscriminately on road sides, particularly in congested and thickly populated residential and commercial areas, also creates traffic chaos and adds to the woes of city residents.
