The Autostade was financed by donations from the five major automobile manufacturers in Canada: American Motors, Chrysler, Ford, Genral Motors, and Volvo.
The name "Autostade" was the French name for the stadium; the anglicised "Automotive Stadium" was used in the official Expo '67 literature, but never stuck.
The Autostade was actually opened for football by the Ottawa Rough Riders with an eastern final against Hamilton on November 19, 1966.

They named themselves after the famous work song "Alouette" (about plucking various parts of a lark), which has become a light-hearted symbol of the Québécois.
(Similarly, during the Second World War the RCAF's 425 Bomber Squadron assumed the lark as its badge and the motto "Je te plumerai" -- I shall pluck you.) From 1968 to 1976 the team played in the Autostade stadium.
The original Alouettes franchise folded after the 1981 CFL season, but were immediately replaced by a new club for 1982, the Montreal Concordes, owned by Canadian mogul Charles Bronfman.

Did not see any cars like these in Hungary, Slovakia or Ireland.  We even saw one or two of them on the the Autostrade (super highway).
at the rest stops on the Autostade!  Right alongside the sandwiches and soda at the counter was a bar where you could buy wine or a shot of whiskey.
Here's our rent-a-car, a Lancia (I had never heard of a Lancia, but we liked it).

In 1975, Molson Stadium received a major facelift with a government-sponsored upgrade to the facilities, including the installation of artificial turf in order that it be used as a venue for field hockey during the 1976 Summer Olympics.
They moved into the Autostade in 1968 and played there until Olympic Stadium became available in 1976, with the exception of the 1972 season.
Over the winter of 1998, the CFL’s board of governors, in a move initiated by the clubs in western Canada, decided to provide the Als with a grant of at least $250,000, and perhaps as much as $300,000, to assist with the repairs.

The Alouettes moved to the newly constructed Autostade in 1968, and intercollegiate crowds began to drop dramatically.
What saved the stadium was the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.

If you travel back toward the autostade you will see a wall with holes built in to it.
This was was used to defend against advancement through this area.

Since they returned to the league seven years ago, the Als have been in five Eastern finals but in only one Grey Cup.

Rick is the Voice of the Montreal Alouettes on CJAD 800--what better career for a guy who snuck his first beer at the Autostade cheering for his current partner in the Als' booth Tony Proudfoot, along with his then favourite player Randy Rhino.
Did you know Rick's father was a World War Two hero?
