The sable, a small quadruped, closely akin to the martens, and known by the zoological names of Martes zibellina or Mustela zibellina, originated in Siberia and has achieved fame for its fur, which is integrated into various clothes fashions (for example a Shtreimel).
Sables are diurnal carnivores, using their sense of smell and hearing to hunt for small prey.
The name sable appears to be Slavonic in origin: compare Russian sobol, whence various languages have adapted the term: German Zobel, Dutch Sabel ; the Modern French zibelline and Mediaeval Latin zibellina derive from the Italian form.

On the Ontario side, the first fish were brought in privately sometime in the 1890s to a headwater pond on the Nottawasaga River.
Of special note is the Grand River again, where the removal of a dam near Brantford in 1989 provided steelhead access to a huge area of suitable spawning habitat.
With respect to the river runs, Bowlby believes a high angler exploitation rate has contributed to the recent decline of the fishery, although he was quick to add that the fishing quality is still good.

On July 16, 1792 Simcoe's proclamation provided that "Lake Geneva, to be called Burlington Bay, and a carrying place leading through the Mohawk Village to where it intersects the river La Tranche, or Thames", should be the dividing line between the counties of York and Lincoln.
His father had studied a map of the territory and its rivers, and had conceived a scheme of building a canal to connect Coote's Paradise with the Grand River, The Thames River, and the Aux Sables River, thus making a water route connecting Lakes Ontario, Erie, St. Clair, and Huron.
It is only ninety three miles from Lake Ontario to Lake Huron by this route, whereas it is four hundred miles between the same two spots when travelling via the Niagara portage.
