  AUXILIARY POWER UNITS
The auxiliary power unit is a hydrazine-fueled, turbine- driven power unit that generates mechanical shaft power to drive a hydraulic pump that produces pressure for the orbiter's hydraulic system.
Because of APU shutdown, the corresponding hydraulic pump is inoperative.
When the APU auto shutdown switch on panel R2 is positioned to inhibit, the automatic shutdown sequence for all three auxiliary power unit controllers is inhibited, and the 9.5-second speed time delay for all three units is inhibited when the APU control 1, 2 or 3 switch is set to the start/run position.

 Auxiliary Power Unit
The auxiliary power unit (APU) is the second source of energy that powers our HEV.
In an effort to determine the most appropriate APU that will meet the required goals for the HEV project, a quality loss function is used based on the Taguchi method.

An APU is a gas turbine engine, started with an electric motor that is powered by batteries or the aircraft's electrical system.
The vast majority of APU use comes while the plane is on the ground where it supplies electrical and pneumatic power for norma ground operations.
The power section is the gas generator portion of the engine and produces all the power for the APU.

Hybrid vehicle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Most designs combine a large electrical generator and a motor into one unit, often situated between the internal combustion engine and the transmission, in the location of the flywheel, replacing both the conventional starter motor and the generator or alternator.
Diesels are not widely used for passenger cars in the United States, as US diesel fuel has long been considered very "dirty", with relatively high levels of sulfur and other contaminants in comparison to the Eurodiesel fuel in Europe, where greater restrictions have been in place for many years.
In combined cycle power plants, gas turbines drive generators, and their exhaust is used to generate steam for steam turbines, thus recovering some of the energy from the heat of the exhaust that would otherwise be wasted.

RE220 Auxiliary Power Unit - Honeywell Aerospace
Operators of aircraft with lower electrical and engine starting power requirements are finding the Honeywell RE220 APU a reliable, efficient and cost-effective source of pressurized bleed air for environmental control systems and emergency electrical power.
The RE220 demonstrates Honeywell's advances in aircraft system integration by being the first general aviation APU to communicate with the aircraft's maintenance data acquisition unit (MDAU).
The 45 kW electrical power generator is fully capable of meeting all system needs.
