Koryarsky hasn't been active in historical time, but Avachinsky is one of the most active volcanoes of Kamchatka.
Our visit of Avachinsky was one of our last trips and we had been able to watch the snow covering more of the mountains for each day of our stay in Petropavlosk.
We stopped at the altitude of about 1000 m on the plateau between the two mountains, where we were welcomed by a large number of curiously watching long-tailed marmots and a Kamchatka bear.

We were about an hour into the hike when we discovered, with the aid of binoculars, that one of the clouds we saw near the top of the volcano was actually a fumerol, or steam vent.
Vera, the volcanologist, told us that Avachinsky last erupted in 1991 and the magma continues to "simmer" beneath a plugged chamber near the crest.
It is certain to erupt again, but we were assured that all of Kamchatka's volcanoes are carefully monitored and we were in no immediate danger.

Avachinsky volcano is 2,741 meters high and it took us seven hours to climb up and three to climb down.
There was a 61 year old Austrian guy in our group who ran up ahead of us, enjoyed the view, and ran back down to meet us when we still had two more hours to reach the top.
