  Avahi - LoveToKnow 1911
AVAHI, the native name of a Malagasy lemur (Avahis laniger) nearly allied to the indri, and the smallest representative of the subfamily Indrisinae, characterized by its woolly coat, and measuring about 28 in.
Unlike the other members of the group, the avahi is nocturnal, and does not associate in small troops, but is met with either alone or in pairs.
Very slow in its movements, it rarely descends to the ground, but, when it does, walks upright like the other members of the group.

Avahi is another implementation for Apple's Bonjour protocol, that this time seems to be cleanroomed using glib, dbus and having bindings for Python and Qt.
Avahi is also a GPL product, that makes it more appealing for GNU lovers (I usually prefer looking at the technical side of matters, instead of licensing).
One of the strong points of Avahi is that has libraries to be compatible with howl and mdnsresponder, the two other implementations that are often used to enable software to use Bonjour.

Avahi could allow a local attacker to bypass security restrictions, caused by improper validation of netlink messages.
An attacker could exploit this vulnerability to bypass security by tricking Avahi into responding to network changes that did not occur.

Avahi would then announce both an ipv4 and an ipv6 service, and if you query for both it would return the ipv6 one by default.
For instance, any use of it with the socket api requires you to also specify the iface to use, meaning you have to special case things, and you can't store the address in an ip address only field.
It would be nice if Avahi could default to return the ipv4 address if there is both an ipv6/ipv4 versions and the ipv6 address is link-local.

lathiat: Avahi now supports static host mappings!
Tonight, I spent a few hours implementing static host mappings for Avahi, which Ross Burton will be happy about.
Hostnames are generally published by the daemon running on the respective machine, but for example if you want to publish a service for a machien that isnt running mdns, there is no hostname for you to reference.
And this differs from avahi-publish-*hostname* in that its a static configuration of hosts that always exists when avahi is running, rather than a temporary published one.
