Avalon (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 2003, the album was ranked number 307 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
The original 1982 stereo mix is left intact and is the same for the CD layer and for the HD layer, allegedly being transferred from analogue master tapes to DSD and processed in DSD throughout the process.
Except for "India", the short instrumenal piece whose original multitrack tape had been lost, all tracks in the surround mix were remixed from multitrack sources, as opposed to two-channel stereo mixes being 'upmixed' to 5.1 as in some DVD-Video releases.

Roxy Music - Avalon - Virgin Records - SACD
Roxy Music was further adorned by Ferry's memorable solo albums which generated hits of their own bringing new listeners to explore, however briefly, his past.
The multi-channel tracks are largely projected from the L/R main speakers and the Centre channels (used for vocals and a chosen instrument most of the time) while the L/R Surrounds largely projects an ambience that places you in the middle of the soundstage.
Avalon was the transition; the gateway into the future while doubling as the end of a time.

Avalon was recorded in the wake of the band's first number one hit--a version of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy"--and although that song isn't on here, its tortured shadow looms large over "While My Heart Is Still Beating", the title track, and the unlikely Balearic anthem "More Than This".
By the time the eighth and so far final studio album from the lasting remaining 3 core members of the band Bryan Ferry, Andy Mackay and Phil Manzanera was released in May of 1982 tensions where running high between the band members, possibly why this collection is such a ground breaker in style and execution.
The album is beautifully written, performed and produced with wonderful technical values for the time; A timeless classic of mysticism these tunes will stay forever in the memory of nice songs.

This is the Cats' debut album and serves as a reminder for those who saw the group - shake down the walls at last year's Sacto Jazz Jubilee that these guys come to play.
Avalon Cats is a group led by drummer Tom Campbell comprised of musicians who usually play more boppish music: trumpeter Bob Summers, trombonist Les Benedict, Rusty Higgins on reeds, guitarist Larry Koonse, pianist Tom Ranier and bassist Richard Simon.
But the Avalon Cats give the arrangements a slight wrench so they are not just mere imitations of the originals.

And after six studio albums, a best-of project, and even a remix album, the foursome adds Stand to their impressive discography.
Avalon has embraced the sound built upon by their last album, The Creed, incorporating more organic elements, leaving behind more and more of the synthesizers and drum loops heavily used on previous records like A Maze Of Grace and even parts of Oxygen.
Almost reminiscent of Avalon classics like "If My People Pray" from In A Different Light, and parts of their self-titled album from 1996, "We Will Stand" sets the theme for this record: standing on God's promise and reaching the world for Jesus with the body of Christ on each arm.

Their second opus "Mystic Places" is a pretty neat album of melodic heavy/power metal with hints into progressive territory, which can be evaluated from good to excellent depending on your tastes, but which doesn't really break a new ground.
Still, the music does not have clear analogues, has the diversity and has hooks, the band has ambitions, so why not to take a deeper look into band's point of view regarding their music and German scene in general.

Avalon Sunset picks up with the luxuriant, string-laden sound of that 1987 release and continues Morrison on a path toward increased, if circumscribed, mainstream acceptance.
Avalon Sunset is also graced by one of Morrison's greatest spiritual anthems, "When Will I Ever Learn to Live in God?," in which the confident exaltations of "Whenever God Shines His Light" give way to self-doubt and yearning.
The album closes with the stately "These Are the Days," a poetic testament of faith which would not be out of place on Leonard Cohen's Various Positions.

Roxy Music : Avalon - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Certainly, the lush, elegant soundscapes of Avalon are far removed from the edgy avant-pop of their early records, yet it represents another landmark in their career.
With its stylish, romantic washes of synthesizers and Bryan Ferry's elegant, seductive croon, Avalon simultaneously functioned as sophisticated make-out music for yuppies and as the maturation of synth pop.
Ferry was never this romantic or seductive, either with Roxy or as a solo artist, and Avalon shimmers with elegance in both its music and its lyrics.

Avalon is that album -- it tells a story from the first song to the last, and it definitely takes you on a journey with it.
After the 1978 reunion album "Manifesto" (Thompson's last with the band), Roxy very clearly became Ferry's vehicle in all respects, with Mackay and Manzanera reduced to the role of "sonic colorists" rather than predominant instrumentalists and arrangers.
Compared to the earlier albums of the "rock and roll" version of Roxy, "Avalon" is thin, shallow, and unsatisfying: contrast it to "Stranded" and "Country Life" and it just doesn't come of as anything of substance.
