Avant garde (sometimes avant-garde) is a French phrase, one of many French phrases used by English speakers.
The official birthday of the Avant Garde is May 17, 1863, the opening of the Salon des Refusés, in Paris, organized by painters who had been refused at the annual Salon of officially sanctioned "academic" art.
The avant garde was originally identified with the promotion of social progress: seeing the group or individual so described as the pioneer of a social reform movement.

Avant garde metal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Avant garde metal, sometimes called experimental, is a cross-genre reference to metal bands characterized by large amounts of experimentation and by non-standard sounds, instruments, and song structures.
While progressive metal, like avant garde metal, is also a genre which favours experimentation and non-standard ideas, there are rather large differences between the two forms.
It should be noted that there is no common agreement within the metal world on the correct usage of the term avant garde metal, though certain issues, such as the presence of experimentation, are agreed upon.

Avant Garde (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Avant Garde (1987-1989) (later Zoom) was a progressive metal band consisting of Kevin Ridel on vocals, Rivers Cuomo on lead/rhythm guitar, Justin Fisher (later of Shufflepuck and Psoma) on bass, Bryn Mutch on percussion, and Michael Stanton on lead/rhythm guitar.
As were the first two tapes, Somethin' Different was recorded in Connecticut, where the band lived then, but this time at Trod Nossel Studios.
The tape was professionally duped and featured the songs and info printed directly onto the clear cassette, as well as a fl and white J-card that had portrait photos of the whole band.

 Enculturation: Christopher Robe
The band is exhibiting the control within their noise as well as in the solo since they smoothly transition from the cliché bridge to noisy verse section without the listener being aware of the transition until after it occurred.
The two most typical ways the band dérives within a song is by either isolating the dérive within a bridge section or by beginning the dérive in the transition from verse to bridge and allowing the dérive to predominate so that the song alters into an entirely new musical structure.
Despite the band’s assertion of spontaneous composition during interviews, articles ignore this aspect of the band since the music industry needs celebrities to make the consumer feel that the celebrity has achieved a level of freedom and creativity that the consumer will never be able to experience except vicariously by purchasing this supra-individual’s product.

Avant-garde - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The vanguard, a small troop of highly skilled soldiers, explores the terrain ahead of a large advancing army and plots a course for the army to follow.
This concept is applied to the work done by small bands of intellectuals and artists as they open pathways through new cultural or political terrain for society to follow.
Due to implied meanings stemming from the military terminology, some people feel the avant-garde implies elitism, especially when used to describe cultural movements.

CONTEXT - This Week in Arts and Ideas from The Moscow Times
AVANT's closing concert on Sunday features Fyodorov, who is famous both as the singer of Auktsyon -- a granddaddy of Russian rock -- and for his own musical projects.
As part of their mission to educate Russian music aficionados, AVANT promotes local bands that can't be pegged to any particular musical style -- such as the humorous, theatrical indie rockers Won James Won and the emotional post-rock group Silent Kit, both of whom play Sunday.
"People should come to hear not a particular band or a fashionable style, but to support the independent scene," he said, voicing his frustration at the fact that the festival's success last year was partly due to indie music being in vogue.

"Big band music" as a concept for music fans is identified most with the swing era, although there were large, jazz-oriented, dance bands before the swing era of the 1930s and 1940s, and large jazz-oriented concert bands after the swing era.
Although virtually all jazz groups prior to the rise of bebop in the early to mid-'40s played for dancers, the term "dance bands" is used to describe orchestras of the 1920s and '30s whose primary function was to play background music for dancers rather than to serve as vehicles for jazz improvisations.
The dance bands, although emphasizing the melody and vocalists, were generally influenced by jazz and incorporated elements of swing after the emer-gence of Benny Goodman in 1935 although they were often classified as "sweet" bands.

It also fused jazz with itself; that is to say, the band combined elements of jazz history and pre-history -- for instance, music from the sanctified church services, minstrel shows, and bawdy houses of late 19th and early 20th century America -- with a modernist spirit of experimentation.
The band won a series of critic's polls and was considered by many to be the finest jazz ensemble in the world.
The band is comprised of Leroy Jenkins on violin and percussion, Braxton on everything from alto to accordion to mixer, Leo Smith on trumpet and bottles, and Abrams on piano (and alto clarinet on one track).

For every band that adheres to rock 'n' roll's "It's better to burn out than fade away" mantra, it seems like there's a Rolling Stones clone clinging desperately to the stage, strutting like hormone-crazed teenagers well into their '50s, and beyond.
Film is very important to the band, and probably influences their penchant for including lots of atmospheric "found sound" recordings in their music.
The band has contributed music to a number of films, including Oliver Stone's "Any Given Sunday" and Miguel Arteta's "Star Maps." The members are working on a feature-length film with Greg King, who has created a number of short films as visual backdrops for the band's live performances.
