  Avant garde metal - FoxyTunes
Avant garde metal, sometimes called experimental, is a cross-genre reference to metal bands characterized by large amounts of experimentation and by non-standard sounds, instruments, and song structures.
While progressive metal, like avant garde metal, is also a genre which favours experimentation and non-standard ideas, there are rather large differences between the two forms (although, confusingly, there is also quite a bit of overlap between the two genres).
One of the most striking differences is that the experimentation of progressive metal lies mostly in complex rhythms and song structures, while the genre usually sticks to a more traditional instrumentation, whereas in avant garde metal the usage of unusual sounds plays usually a fundamental role.

Avant Garde - The term "avant garde" is generally applied to bands that try to achieve a higher level of artistry and creative exploration, usually by way of the fey and surreal.
Avant garde approaches composition with a fresh, or inventive outlook -- complexity isn't an issue, but wild creativity is. Avant garde metal tends to be theatrical and melodramatic, attempting an infusion of art music, impressionistic and disjointed arrangements, and metal.
Avant garde is not a genre, but a term that can be generally applied to any band of any genre pushing the boundaries and composing from a truly original direction.

 Brazilian Metal
Heavy metal was a genre claiming legitimacy through a strategy of radical negation, a negation directed both at tradition and at everything that’s part of the present actuality, the totality of what is. Mílton was the musical embodiment of both the past and the present, precisely the two major targets of the headbanging negation.
The irreconcilability between metal and its surroundings, then, is not only a spatial impasse: it is derived in fact from the impossibility of temporalizing that space, for the only available temporalization was based on an ideology explicitly negated, and denounced as a failure, by one’s very surroundings.
Metal’s response to that collapse was unique, and it was firmly rooted in the experiences of urban working and lower middle class youth.

The term avant garde is generally applied to bands that try to achieve a higher level of artistry and creative exploration, usually by way of the fey and surreal.
Whereas prog metal simply attempts more difficult arrangements, the avant garde throws out the rule book altogether and approaches composition with a fresh, or inventive outlook- complexity isn't an issue, but wild creativity is. Avant garde metal tends to be theatrical and melodramatic, attempting an infusion of art music, impressionistic and disjointed arrangements, and metal.
The forebearer of death and fl metal, thrash brought a higher level of intensity into metal, primarily by combining the intensity and tempos of early hardcore punk with the rigidity and dexterity of heavy metal.

Pure heavy metal is mainly blues-based, with pentatonic scales and a blues-like song structure; fl metal and related forms often draw on classical music, even if at a first glance it seems to be only distorted guitars playing a very fast repeating melody.
Metal's profound influence on contemporary popular music is again seen in its effect on several bands in the garage rock revival set of the early 21st century.
Despite hair metal's popularity at the time, many began to consider it unimportant or derisory, due to a common perception that the bands were more focused on their make-up, clothing (usually spandex), lyrics, and stage shows, than on their music.

This means that avant garde metal is about allowing thought and creativity flow more freely within the music, and encouraging the bands to "think outside the box." This greater flow of creativity and thinking abstractly yields results in the form of strange arrangements and abnormal song structures.
As of now, their raw fl metal properties are a thing of the past, as they have now become a sophisticated, musically brilliant avant garde metal band.

This CD is hard to place — it is certainly avant-garde, though it does not fall cleanly into gothic, death or fl metal, though it has elements of all of these, and is quite atmospheric in places as well.

Celtic Frost's impact on the evolution of European heavy metal cannot be overstated.
Along with power metal kings Helloween (and to a lesser degree, the sometimes cartoonish Mercyful Fate), Frost's enduring influence on Europe's heavy metal landscape is arguably comparable to Metallica's standing in America.
The sudden departure of Priestly also proved to be a blessing in disguise, as his replacement, American drummer Reed St. Mark, brought a confidence and musicianship that the group sorely needed.

As metal was integrated into the cultural mainstream, it was perhaps inevitable that a full-fledged, card-carrying avant-garde would come into being.
The experimental metal community that began to emerge in the mid-90's, centered in major cosmopolitan centers like Tokyo and Los Angeles and Oslo, set its sights not on MTV or commercial radio but on the limits of the genre itself.

Once tabbed a fl metal supergroup, this collection of members of various fl metal bands (Mayhem, Ulver, Ved Buens Ende, and in an earlier incarnation, Emperor) burst onto the scene with Aspera Hiems Symfonia, a classic symphonic fl metal album.
While Aspera is very much a fl metal album, all thoughts of staying within the genre were thrown out the window with the followup, La Masquerade Infernale, a truly unique affair that that might be described as progressive avant-garde art metal.
Only scant traces of true fl metal remain, as the vocal style has changed to a kind of carnivalesque narration, and the various instruments (metal and non) branch out in countless directions.

More than a mere singer, Garm (as this reviewer is most-want to remember him) was an integral part of the unique sound that was Arcturus, providing influence in sound and texture and helping to guide the band from its raw extreme metal roots to a more avant garde sound.
"Aspera Hiems Symfonia" was true fl metal, but it also introduces clean vocals, folk influences, and a touch of modernism that was up to that point unknown in fl metal.
