Game Studies - Perspectives of Computer Game Philology
Jesper Juul’s thesis "A Clash between Game and Narrative" (1999), in which he analyzes narrative and interactive traits of computer games and interactive fiction, is a case in point: while narrativity might be an important characteristic of certain literary genres, it is definitely of little use in determining the "literariness" of a given text.
In relation to games this means that a player does not necessarily gain access to the implicit rules of the game through playing, but that he or she will find a way to interact meaningfully with the game, no matter what the actual rules encoded by its designers are.
It is therefore the player’s desire to become the model player of the game that enables him or her to identify with the avatar, and thus to interact with the gameworld and make progress in the game, which in turn is perceived as narrative development.

 Avatar
An Avatar is defined as the incarnation (bodily manifestation) of an Immortal Being, or of the Ultimate Being.
The philosophy reflected in the Hindu epics is the doctrine of the avatar (incarnation of a god as a human being).
The two main avatars of Vishnu that appear in the epics are Rama, the hero of the Ramayana, and Krishna, the friend of the Pandavas in the Mahabharata.

Quake - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Quake popularised several major advances in the 3D game genre: it uses 3-dimensional models for players and monsters instead of 2-dimensional sprites; and the world in which play takes place is created as a true 3-dimensional space, rather than a 2-dimensional map with height information which is then rendered to 3D.
Thus the final game was very stripped down from its original intentions, and instead featured gameplay similar to Doom and its sequel, although levels and enemies were closer to medieval RPG style rather than science-fiction.
Praised throughout the gaming community, it quickly dethroned previous FPS titles and revolutionized the way multiplayer games were developed.

When he first came to Britannia he resided in the town of Britain, however after his great adventuring partner was deemed the Avatar, he moved into the Deep Forest outside Yew, where he keeps his talking horse, Smith (Iolo constantly scolds the horse for his sarcastic comments to the Avatar).
By the time the Avatar made his final journey to Britannia, Iolo was an old man. He moved to a woodland estate east of Britain and fell under the Guardian's control in an expedition to Dungeon Despise.
The Avatar freed Iolo, who eventually repaid the Avatar by teaching him an advanced bow skill, and placing the rune of compassion inside the tower at Despise -- facilitating the destruction of the Guardian's evil chokehold on the land.

Since computer game theory is a relatively new discipline, much of what has emerged thus far has come out of theorists from other disciplines absorbing game theory into their purview.
Avatars must by definition have a certain level of ambiguity in their characters in order to allow the players to transpose or project themselves into them.

This lack of academic research in the field of computer games can be attributed to a couple factors, the first being the notion that computer games are merely toys for children and thus properly relegated to the field of pedagogy.
The queer female gaming subject also delights in the abject annihilation of her foes, in the adrenaline rush of combat, the exchange of cuts, shots and blows that rupture the body surface of "the other".
These patches suggest that the boundary between game patches and official games is permeable, that game patches not only subvert and diversify gender stereotypes in official games, but game hacker artists also are influencing the kinds of gender subject configurations that will pattern the production of future games.
