He (or she) is not an embodiment of a god (as in the traditional meaning of the term "avatar"), but of a set of ethic guidelines called the Virtues.
Ultima IV seems to say they are different persons altogether, but later Ultimas (Ultima VII part two: Serpent Isle as the most definite example) imply the Stranger and the Avatar are one and same person.
Ultima IX does not allow the character to be named, as at the time the implementors believed fully spoken dialogue was not possible to implement around this, but with the fan-made dialogue patch, this is possible.

When he first came to Britannia he resided in the town of Britain, however after his great adventuring partner was deemed the Avatar, he moved into the Deep Forest outside Yew, where he keeps his talking horse, Smith (Iolo constantly scolds the horse for his sarcastic comments to the Avatar).
By the time the Avatar made his final journey to Britannia, Iolo was an old man. He moved to a woodland estate east of Britain and fell under the Guardian's control in an expedition to Dungeon Despise.
The Avatar freed Iolo, who eventually repaid the Avatar by teaching him an advanced bow skill, and placing the rune of compassion inside the tower at Despise -- facilitating the destruction of the Guardian's evil chokehold on the land.

Ultima V (U5) was more of an evolution from U4 - combat and the actions of non-player characters (NPCs) were improved, but as the basic design of the game hadn’t been overhauled from U4, it gave the developers plenty of room to create another in-depth story for U5.
The Avatar is likely to try to accept the misdeeds of others in spite of his own views, whereas the Hypocrite would not see tolerance of "unvirtuous behavior" as a good thing.

The concept of the Virtues was a very popular one to fans of the Ultima IV-VI trilogy, so it is of no surprise that a number of players strive to role-play their characters as being on the lifelong Quest of the Avatar, or to at least pay homage to the virtues.
The Avatar would find no honor in deceiving others, and the player who chooses to role-play as the Avatar should avoid any attempts to scam new players, the bearing false witness against an adversary, nor take advantage of another’s generosity.
The Avatar would try to help others who have been wronged, and avenging wrongful deaths of others is a good way to develop trust in existing and new friendships between PCs.

Anyway, when I started to play Ultima V on a PC some years later, I took out my C compiler and started digging into the files again.

Similar to Ultima VII, Lord British has indicated that approximately the first 3-5% of the game will be a linear tutorial in order to acquaint the player with the game and controls, and then the plot will open to become non-linear.
Transferring your character of The Avatar was a feature of the older Ultimas (this option was left out from Ultima VII onwards).
Essentially, there is no "typical" party in Ascension like that which featured in Ultimas before Pagan, but there will be companions who will join the Avatar in his travels to help with specific tasks and who will have their own agendas for joining him.
