Avatar Press has announced the addition of David Marks to the staff to begin handling press, marketing, and other communications responsibilities.
A new position at Avatar, the addition is intended to help the publisher better address the needs and concerns of audiences and the industry alike during a year which Avatar expects to be a growth period for the company.
Marks was chosen to assume these responsibilities because of his experience and knowledge of the industry, and due to his similar interests in taste and direction.

One of Avatar's current projects is the scabrous DICKS 2 by Garth Ennis and John McCrea, featuring the wildly irreverent tales of Dougie and Ivor, two characters who go back to Ennis and McCrea's earliest collaboration.
He's "pretty pleased" the Avatar's general direction and thus the goals over the next few years are the basic ones: "reaching out to an increasing readership and new audiences." Part of the plan is an expanded relationship with Diamond, which Avatar signed up with for their bookstore distribution.

While Miller's schedule would preclude him from rewriting the script for comics, and having an artist adapt the comic directly from the unused film script wasn't something Avatar was willing to do, so a bridge between the script and the comic was found.

Also needed are artists for licensed books that require the ability to draw good likenesses, artists for future Lady Death series, and over a dozen other high-profile projects.
"We currently have 22 artists working on comics for Avatar Press, and we're still not where I'd like to be in terms of having artists available to assign to upcoming projects," says Avatar Press EIC William Christensen.

I want to make sure that the products we release make sense at Avatar, that we are fans of the material, and that we can producing compelling material that will excite comic readers yet also bridge the gap with the mainstream movie watchers.
Most Avatar readers are familiar with my gray-toned art in Warren Ellis' 'Strange Killings,' where we rely on fl and white to enforce the disturbing quality of that series.
In addition to these three titles, Avatar also holds the comics publishing licenses for "Stargate SG-1" and "Robocop." Christensen says that while licensing is an important part of Avatar, they won't be abandoning creator-owned properties any time soon.

Comics appeal to a lot of people, whether you like superheroes, sci-fi, horror, political commentary, or all of the above.
I was just using it as an example of the diversity of comics, but there is a lot of political allegory/commentary in modern comics like The Ultimates and Civil War, and there's stuff like Amazing Spider-Man #36 which deals with the events of 9/11 from a Marvel Universe perspective.
I have not bought many comic books recently but liked this memorable moment from the Episode III comic.

Avatar Press is well-known for its bevy of horror and sci-fi titles such as Brian Pulido’s Lady Death, Alan Moore’s Hypothetical Lizard, Garth Ennis’ Chronicles of Wormwood and 303, Frank Miller’s Robocop, the Stargate titles and of course various works by Warren Ellis and others.
Christensen, Avatar is known for predominantly horror and sci-fi, though sub-genres of those are common as well.
But if you're going to play in the superhero arena, you need to play by the rules, and superhero comics are supposed to come out monthly to meet the expectations of a habitual Wednesday audience.

It is a short opera, a "prompt and business-like opera", as the Doctor describes it in his letter to me, but is nevertheless moving and firmly establishes me as both a comics author and a librettist.
I think I may be beaten out by Too Much Coffee Man for the first opera based on a web comic, but this is definitely the first that has RACCOONS singing counterpoint to dinosaurs.
