The company was founded in 1623 in Constantinople by one Avedis, who, while looking for a way to turn base metal into gold, created an alloy combining tin, copper and silver into a sheet of metal that could make musical sounds without shattering.
Avedis took the surname of Zildjian, Armenian for "son of a cymbals maker", and began an industry whose main product remained secretive for generations.
The Zildjian Company moved from manufacturing noisemakers to frighten the enemies of the Ottoman Empire to musical instruments in the 19th century.

Armand Zildjian (1921 - December 26, 2002) was a manufacturer of cymbals and the head of the Avedis Zildjian Company.
Born in Quincy, Massachusetts, Armand Zildjian was the scion of a cymbals-making tradition that dated back to his ancestor Avedis, who began the company in 1623 in Constantinople.
Zildjian has an honorary degree from Berklee College of Music, is an inductee into the Percussive Hall of Fame, and has his name immortalized on the Guitar Center Rock Walk in Hollywood, California.

The company was founded in 1981 in Meductic, New Brunswick, Canada by Robert Zildjian, son of Avedis Zildjian III, the head of the Avedis Zildjian Company.
Family tradition had it that the head of the company would only pass its secrets down to the oldest son, but Avedis III gave the information to both of his sons, Armand and Robert.
The HH or "hand hammered" line were widely regarded as being K Zildjians in all but name, and there was nothing in the settlement to prevent this being the case, although Sabian was prevented from claiming that it was true.

Avedis saw the business as still relatively small and was worried about the possibility of internecine family conflict that could result from expanded ownership.
What Avedis III did instead for his younger brother was to help his children with their education, so they could pursue other business opportunities.
There is a story about Avedis Zildjian III, the American nephew who answered his uncle Aram's call in 1927 to accept the baton of leadership, a story expresses the very essence of the entrepreneur who is not just a competent businessman but a man of business passion as well.

As her son, Armand Zildjian, the company's current President, relates, she was intrigued by the romantic side of the business, the blend of family, history and music.
Without a doubt, one important reason for Avedis Zildjian Company's success in global markets, beside a reputation for quality, can be traced to the growing global appeal of American popular music during the post-World War II era--music for which the cymbal was an essential part of the percussion repertoire.
Indeed, the company was the premium fabricator of the cymbal with market share in a number of countries outside of Turkey by the middle of the 19th century, long before Coke, Caterpillar or Mercedes-Benz cars had come on the scene.

 PAS.org: About PAS
In 1927, Avedis received a letter from his uncle, Aram, telling him that it was now his turn to take over the ancient family art of cymbal making.
But rather than return to Turkey, where the Zildjian family had crafted cymbals since 1623 (and where he himself had apprenticed as a young boy), Avedis convinced Aram to move the company to the U.S. "I was only eight years old when Aram came to America, but I remember him well," said Armand.
He remained involved in the day-to-day running of the company until he died in 1979 at the age of 90.

Zildjian cymbals have adorned drum sets belonging to the greatest musicians of all genres, from the big bands of the jazz and swing era, to today’s Metallica, Dave Matthews’ Band, Lauryn Hill, and countless others around the globe.
Avedis continued to be innovative with his products, using musicians’ suggestions to create cymbals that produced fresh new sounds, helping shape the music of the era.
Zildjian’s success with jazz musicians was followed by swing, Bebop, and the growing popularity of the school marching band.

They've reproduced one from Gene Krupa letting the Zildjian folks know how happy he is with his latest shipment, and one from the U.S. Government giving Zildjian permission to buy extra copper during World War II (and there are plenty of other letters and advertisements reproduced in the book).
In that respect, the author and the Zildjian Company (and this book really is, in all practical terms, the story according to Zildjian) deserve a lot of credit for their willingness to "tell it like it is".
Not only did they mention that after the death of Avedis Zildjian III in 1979, son Robert left the company to form a competing cymbal company, they pretty much said that they didn't blame him for doing it.

This resulted in a family feud and a legal struggle which ended only when Robert left the company to form the rival Sabian cymbals company in 1981.
The cymbals were made with both automated processes and hand hammering, but Zildjian ended the latter tradition in 1964 after a rise in demand resulting from the popularity of the Beatles' drummer Ringo Starr.
The company is now run by Armand’s daughters Craigie and Debbie Zildjian.

His influence eventually standardized the combination of 8x12" and 9x13" hanging toms mounted on the bass drum, and he developed and popularised many of the cymbal techniques that became standards.
His collaboration with Armand Zildjian of the Avedis Zildjian Company developed the hi-hat stand and standardized the names and uses of the ride cymbal, the crash cymbal, the splash cymbal, the pang cymbal and the swish cymbal.
