  On the TAFF Trail: Appendix
The North American administrator at that time was Avedon Carol and during her TAFF trip to the UK in 1983 (she was Fan Guest of Honour at ALBACON) we'd developed a close personal relationship, one which was far from being secret.
Unfortunately, Avedon vetoed these because Bergeron had just begun his attacks on her and she thought that any tinkering with the rules at that point would have just given him another excuse to pillory her.
Both Avedon and the Nielsen Haydens thought the latter would be too difficult to sell to US fandom but a version of the former, modified to the requirement that a winning candidate must secure 20% of the vote on both sides of the Atlantic, was accepted.

So, we have included some insightful observations made about her by friends and collegues, as well as some fun quotes from Carol herself.
Carol was not only a writer in her own right, she also loved the company of her fellow writers and was the inspiration for several fictional characters.
Except for Carol, who had just had work done and didn't care two hoots who knew about it.

Avedon is one of my favorite bloggers, but she’s mistaken about this.
Avedon claims that after sex a man "becomes an innocent bystander," and therefore he has no responsibility for what happens.
I have yet to figure out how the life of the kids in question would be better if the men who love them had been legally permitted to ditch them because their mothers were lousy human beings.

Avedon Carol posted a couple of times a response to my MESS OF CRACKPOTTAGE post below; I noticed that there were multiples, and that she had clarified her point and wasn’t trying to link me to Ann Coulter (ick), and thanked her.
In the world of ideas and argument, I try and extend pretty much everyone (extreme outliers excepted) the courtesy of assuming that they say what they tell me they say, and that the rightness or wrongness of their ideas and words is different than their standing, or their value as a person.
Avedon, in her comment, didn't extend me the same courtesy, hence my reaction.

"The Fantasists in the White House," wrote John McCrory
Avedon Carol's round-up of the first days of Richard Clarke's "revelations" hits all the right notes regarding what's new here — as I said yesterday, not a heck of a lot.
Carol makes the further excellent point about who in the debate over terrorism and Iraq are the hard-nosed realists and who has been living in a fantasy.
A level-headed and informed person like Richard Clarke, or Avedon Carol, or me, and countless others, could easily see that these folks were a bit off, spouting conspiracy theories like those of Laurie Mylroie when one would expect them to know better.

In the afternoon, Avedon and I drove to her bank to deposit $180 of TAFF money I had on me but was unlikely to need in the few days remaining of my trip.
That evening, Avedon had a computer class at the University of Maryland, so Ken Josenhans and I decided to go along with her and to hang out on the campus.
Avedon and I have been back to the US many times since then, and if we could afford to we'd visit it even more often.

Duncan was out of town and Avedon (who was guest-posting on Duncan's blog) is the one with whom you should have a beef.
No, the point is that mixing up Atrios and Avedon is pretty fucking insignificant in the greater scheme of things (esp. compared to, say, the actual point at issue -- a person committing suicide b/c of horrible guilt), and after the first couple people pointed it out, and it's pointless to continue harping on it.

Now Avedon's post I referred to has become a sort of weird controversy.

There's been a bit of a dust-up in the blogosphere this week between one of my longtime favorites, Avedon Carol of The Sideshow, and Kevin Drum at The Washington Monthly.
If you look at this from a distance, it would appear that Drum is offering conciliatory appeasement of Conservatives and Carol is beating the war drum of the "far left." Upon closer inspection, though, I think neither of those generalizations are true.
We'll get to my response in a moment, but Avedon Carol shot back with what seems to be the sticking point for most progressives reading those proposals.

Your mission, Avedon, should you choose to accept it, is to create and maintain a website similar to Media Matters, to track the rubbish emitted from the right wing pie holes, and to provide sound bite responses (as per your 'Fox News territory') for each and every wing nut frame.
I have no truck with the Tories, in general, but as you noted, Avedon, they act like an opposition party, and more, their role as an opposition party is fully accepted as part ofthe political culture.
Not only that, Avedon, but having no real retort to the fact that Ginsburg is not an ultra-lefty, he brings in this irrelevant tangent.

But the fact remains that the things on both Avedon's list and my friend's are exactly the kinds of issues that Democrats routinely campaign on.
Gosh, this may be a real weenie of an observation, but it seems to me that we have just had a lot of bad luck getting our hands on the types of leadership we need to sell the common sense ideals we have.

Armed Liberal: A MESS OF CRACKPOTTAGE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Avedon Carol has sent some traffic over, so I went to take a look.
It’s frustrating to me. I feel like some kind of linguistic hermaphrodite, because when I talk about things like patriotism (and in her case earlier, the Pledge issue), I feel like people who I’d probably somewhat agree with — on many things - look at me like I’m speaking Aramaic.
Carol has a long, discursive post, where she starts with my comment about liberalism and patriotism, and drifts onward to a general comment about ‘the Right wing folks (the Ann Coulters etc.) are crackpots’, with what I take as the clear inference that I'm on Ann's side.

Welcome to Illiberal Conservative Media (ICM) - by eRiposte
In comments to my introductory post about this website at The Left Coaster, three commenters - Tampa Student, Mary, and Avedon Carol - suggest that a more appropriate term for the American mainstream media may be "corporatist." I guess that's a reasonable suggestion.
It also turns out that there is an insidious nature to the media where the corporatist/conservative bent is often hidden nicely from public view.
The only thing I'm sure of that whenever we hear "liberal media" we have to make clear that they can only be talking about The Nation and AAR, since there's not much else out there that can accurately be called "liberal".

The Oprah Winfrey-9/11 Ticket Agent Suicide Myth? at Blog P.I.
Earlier this week the political blogosphere witnessed an interesting and fairly infrequent occurrence — a minor blogfight pitting an academic left blogger against an activist left blogger: At the Prospect’s newest blog, Horse’s Mouth, former Spinsanity co-writer Brendan Nyhan slammed Eschaton for taking a callous shot at President Bush.
Nyhan initially mistook guest poster Avedon Carol for Atrios himself, and chaos ensued.
As cited by both Carol and Nyhan, Susie Madrak at Suburban Guerilla had written on the morning prior:
