Known for their rallying cry “Avengers Assemble!” and nickname “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes,” the Avengers is an answer of sorts to DC Comics' all-star Justice League.

These Avengers were consideribly more militaristic and their efforts were more formally coordinated, with a plethora of 'maneuvres' and offensive and defensive formations, as well as various gadgets and vehicles.

For a short time in the late '70s, The Avengers were at the very center of a flourishing San Francisco punk scene that also included Crime, Chrome, The Nuns, and of course, the Dead Kennedys.
During their brief tenure (1977 through 1979), The Avengers were a train wreck in progress, an incendiary explosion of fearsome punk rock energy that careened up and down the West Coast, climaxing at the infamous 1978 Bill Graham-promoted Winterland concert at which the Sex Pistols performed for the last time.
The release also features three previously unrecorded Avengers songs played by a revamped version of the band dubbed the Scavengers, featuring Houston and Ingraham, as well as Joel Reader (formerly of the Mr T Experience, now of the Plus-Ones) and Danny "Panic" Sullivan (Screeching Weasel, The Riverdales, Groovie Ghoulies).

Patrick Macnee once said, "The Avengers is a show about a man in a bowler hat and a woman who throws men over her shoulders." That sums the program up as well as anything, for The Avengers is a show that leaves much to the viewer's imagination.
The Avengers focuses on the adventures of secret agent John Steed and the succession of talented amateurs he recruits to help him solve a series of unique and off-kilter crimes and plots against the state.
The Avengers began in 1960 when an almost vagabond, and then semi-employed, actor named Patrick Macnee was approached to take the role of John Steed, a mysterious figure who would be a secondary lead to the character of Dr. David Keel, played by Ian Hendry, on a new television adventure/thriller called The Avengers.

In a nutshell, The Avengers tells the tale of how ultra-suave secret agent John Steed (Ralph Fiennes) and his sexy scientist sidekick, Emma Peel (Uma Thurman), tangle with megalomaniac Sir August De Wynter (Sean Connery), who is trying to flmail the world using Prospero, his weather-controlling machine.
Steed and Peel are the perfect mismatched couple -- he plays by the rules, she believes that they were made to be broken -- but that doesn't prevent them from working well together, or from developing a slight romantic attachment.
