Best, worst and average case - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Average performance and worst-case performance are the most used in algorithm analysis.
Less widely found is best-case performance, but it does have uses, for example knowing the best cases of individual tasks can be used to improve accuracy of an overall worst case analysis.
Determining what average input means is difficult, and often that average input has properties which make it difficult to characterise mathematically (consider, for instance, algorithms that are designed to operate on strings of text).

The average performance of 17-year-olds dropped from 1973 to 1982, rose from 1982 to 1992, and has since remained about the same, resulting in an overall gain from 1973 to 1999.
In general, the average performance of both males and females in mathematics improved from the early 1970s to the late 1990s, including the period from 1990 to 1999 (Campbell, Hombo, and Mazzeo 2000).
The performance of Hispanic 17-year-olds increased from 1990 to 1999.

The average water use of the four high-performance clothes washers was 18.8 gallons, of which 3.4 gallons was hot water and 15.4 gallons was cold water.
The average cycles/day for each machine in the study varied considerably ranging on average from 3.2 to 10.9 cycles/day for all 30 machines (six conventional baseline machines plus 24 high-performance machines) that were monitored.
Given the average use of all five manufacturers' machines (baseline plus high-performance) at Fort Hood over the time period of the study of 6.4 cycles/day/machine and extrapolated for an entire year (365 days), the total water savings of the high-performance machines compared to the baseline conventional machines at Fort Hood is 38,780 gallons/year/machine.

However, the performance quoted in the advertisements was obtained under conditions unlikely to be seen in practical applications: multi-megabyte-sized files and eighteen or more disks in a striped array[1].
Linear regression is then performed on average retrieval time measured by the first process as a function of the number of concurrent processes retrieving files.
The average measured time is independent of file size and is used to determine the effect of configuration changes on the cumulative latencies of the disks, SCSI and Fiber Channel interfaces and operating system overhead.

Average prices for advisory programs and benchmarks in corn and soybeans over 1995-2004 as well as average differences are shown in Table 5.
Average differences from farmer benchmarks for corn are larger, ranging from 9 to 11 ¢ cents per bushel.
Average differences for 50/50 advisory revenue range from 5 to $7 per acre for market benchmarks over 1995-2004 and 8 to $12 per acre for farmer benchmarks (Table 6).

Can You Improve Your Marketing Performance?
A widely accepted axiom about producers' marketing performance states that "farmers sell two-thirds of their crop in the bottom one-third of the crop's annual price range." However, analysis of the average corn and soybean price received by Illinois farmers over the last 27 years suggests that the statement is in error.
For soybeans, the average for that four-month period was 36 percent for all years, and 35 percent and 36 percent for normal and short crop years, respectively.
The fairly constant average marketing pattern by farmers from year to year results in better performance in short crop years because a larger percentage of the crop is marketed during the period of higher prices.

Second, the average price received by all producers does not represent a strategy that could be implemented by an individual producer, since the timing and amount of marketings is not known in advance.
Fourth, the average price received is influenced by the timing of pricing decisions of corn and soybean producers.Conceptually, an average price received reflects the marketing performance of farmers, rather than the range of available market prices. It is a relative benchmark rather than an external or objective benchmark.
In the case of corn, the mean of the average cash prices for the eight-year period was $2.34 per bushel. The mean of the harvest cash prices was $2.40, and the mean of the average prices received by Illinois farmers was $2.29.

Math - My fourth grader tells me that the average of a set of data is always computed by adding all the numbers together and dividing by the total number.
Medians and modes are also sometimes referred to as averages, as supported by the dictionary's definition 1a.
However, for a fourth grader, understanding what an average is and how to compute it (in the common usage of the term) is more important than making distinctions among other types of "average" measures.

 Servicing Scorecard—Isolating Portfolio Servicing Performance
It does this by isolating the portfolio servicer’s performance in executing necessary tasks and comparing those numbers to servicing performance averages for the market—given collateral with the same level of risk.
For example, a portfolio servicer with a total loss index of 115 would be demonstrating a loss of $1.15 compared to an average market loss of $1.00 for collateral of equivalent risk.
With the market data a key to accuracy, Servicing ScoreCard derives its comparison averages from industry-standard databanks that are so comprehensive—46-million individual mortgages and over $1 trillion in non-agency mortgage and asset-backed securities—and so detailed that they can yield authoritative component averages no matter what the target collateral’s risk may be.

So, for example, to get a load average of 1.5 over a sample interval of 1 second, it would indicate that during that interval all 4 CPUs were 100% used, and there were 2 VMs waiting to execute.

To base the performance of engines by their peak horsepower is great for the ego but it does not determine the useful power produced by the engine.
This is reason why engines with more average torque but less peak horsepower produce faster acceleration than engines with more peak horsepower but less average torque and why engines should be measured by how much average torque and horsepower they produce.
Add together the torque or horsepower produced at each 500 rpm increment from 1000 to peak rpm and then divide the total amount of torque or horsepower by the number of 500 rpm increments from 1000 to peak rpm.
