The Avery Normal Institute in Charleston, South Carolina was opened in 1865 to educate African Americans in the aftermath of the Civil War.
A graduate of the Avery Normal Institute and South Carolina College, J. Arthur Brown assumed the presidency of the Charleston Branch of the NAACP in 1953.
Clark was a graduate of the Avery Normal Insititute in Charleston, and began her long teaching career on rural John's Island, SC in 1916.

The composer Avery (Alan) Claflin, author of instrumental and vocal music, was born in Keene on the 21 June 1898, the same year of the composers Abramsky, Arundell, Bacarisse, Bacon, Cheslock, Delannoy, Demuth, Eisler, Gershwin, Hamerik, Harsányi, Hába, James, Knipper, Krohn, Lazarus, Massarani, Mihalovici, Mulder, Plaza-Alfonzo, Rankl, Rubinstein, Ullmann.
He died in Greenwich (Conn.) on the 9th Jenuary 1979

 Manuscripts Collections: John Henry McCray Papers
Born in Youngstown, Fla., McCray moved with his family to South Carolina at the age of six and grew up in the Lincolnville area of Charleston County.
His early interest in writing, speaking and public issues manifested itself during his years at Charleston's Avery Institute, where for three years he was the first honor student in his class, served as editor of the school newspaper, and repeatedly won prizes for his oratorical skills.
He graduated form Avery as valedictorian in 1931 (with the highest four-year average of any student since 1872) and went on to receive a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Talladega College (Alabama) in 1935.

Not counting Debussy's unfinished project, the first operatic treatment of ''The Fall of the House of Usher'' came in 1921, the product of an obscure American composer named Avery Claflin.
A second ''Usher'' opera, by Larry Sitsky, was presented in 1965 at the Hobart Festival in Australia and widely broadcast over that country's public television network.

I am completing research for a dissertation on the American composer Avery Claflin, who studied composition with Satie briefly during WWI.
I would be very interested in any comments made by other composers who studied directly with Satie.
