The county was formed in 1841 from parts of Burke County and Wilkes County.
Caldwell County is divided into three distinct geographic sections: the Blue Ridge Mountains, which dominate the northern and western parts of the county; the gently rolling Piedmont country in the middle and southern parts of the county; and the Brushy Mountains, an isolated remnant of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
In the county the population is spread out with 23.40% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 30.50% from 25 to 44, 25.10% from 45 to 64, and 13.30% who are 65 years of age or older.

Avery County is the 100th and last county formed in North Carolina in 1911, from portions of Mitchell, Watauga and Caldwell Counties.
It is named for Waightstill Avery (1741-1819) who was a Colonel in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, a member of North Carolina state legislature, 1776, 1782-83, 1793, North Carolina State Attorney General, 1777-79; and a member of North Carolina state senate, 1796.
Approximately half of the county lies within the Pisgah National Forest.

I am interested in the various Davis families of Western North Carolina, prior to 1860.
After the war he settled in what is now Avery County, North Carolina, but was then Burke County.
Their son Jacob Davis, born 1801, married his cousin Susanna Miller in 1825, and they lived at Three Mile Creek awhile, then moved to Blount County, Tennessee for a couple of years, then to Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC where both died, he in 1873, she in 1895.
