The Avery Downer House/Robbins Hunter Museum is an historic house museum furnished with 18th and 19th century decorative arts acquired by the original owners as well as collectors tied to the house over its long history.
Avery's "temple" was constructed using timbers as thick as 14 inches square; some being as long as 42 feet.
Throughout the house, from the solid walnut columns to the carefully crafted interior woodwork and plaster details, the Avery Downer House stands as a monument to early nineteenth century craftsmanship and intellect.

 Architect Studio 3D, from the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust
One of these was Avery Coonley, who in 1907 commissioned Wright to design a house in the upscale suburb of Riverside, Illinois.
As in all Wright's buildings, the Coonley House is unified by its design on the interior as well as the exterior.
The colored patterns on the outside of the house show that Wright was thinking about these types of patterns long before the "textile block" houses he would create in the 1920s.

Early hotels were the Central Park, erected in 1879, and the Clifton House, constructed in 1875 as a residence by John E. Brehler and converted to a hotel in 1878.
The Shackleton House, built in the summer of 1881 by Thomas Shackleton and operated by John W. Cleveland, was possibly the only "temperance" hotel in the history of Mount Clemens.
One held at the Avery was preserved by a description in the Mount Clemens Monitor of September 11, 1896.

This house ("The Hive") was continually occupied by members of the Avery family until July 20, 1894 when it was totally destroyed by fire started by sparks from an engine of the nearby railroad.
The Avery Memorial Association was organized in 1894 after the burning of the Hive, and was incorporated in 1895 under the laws of Connecticut as a non-profit, charitable and educational institution.
It is fully responsible for the care of the Memorial at the site of the Hive, the first Avery burying ground in Groton, and the restoration and upkeep of the Ebenezer Avery house where the wounded were cared for after the battle at Fort Griswold, September 6, 1781.
