I can recomend Avianca for a south America travel, their have improved their image, I suppose the safety is also ok, well at least as a passenger I felt safe on both planes and I didn't think to much about it.
Avianca has improved the on-time performance at least for the last two years of my last 6 years of traveling from the USA to Colombia.
Avianca is in a class of its own when it comes to service - bad catering, rude and disinterested crews.

Avianca, a unit of Alianza Summa, argued in the papers that it should be given the extension because of the size and complexity of the case, among other reasons.
Summa — formed by the merger of Avianca with fellow Colombian airlines Aces and Sam last year — has suffered along with other carriers from the slowdown in air travel, while it has also been hurt by rising fuel and insurance costs and a depreciation of the peso.

BOGOTA, Colombia (Reuters) — Struggling Colombian airline Avianca and its U.S. subsidiary of the same name have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States to restructure up to $130 million in debt, a top official said Friday.
Avianca, which joined up with SAM and local rival ACES last year to form Summa, dominates aviation in Colombia, but has also been hit by a depreciation of the peso, which has pushed up fuel costs.
Avianca lost about $35 million in 2002, down from about $94 million the year before, according to preliminary company figures due to be presented at a shareholders' assembly at the end of March.
