 CNN.com - Remembering dearly departed bowl games - Jan. 1, 2003
As college football's glut of 28 bowl games meanders toward a conclusion, it might be appropriate to pause for a moment and remember some not-so dearly departed postseason classics.
A few of the many once-marginal, now-defunct bowl games demonstrated admirable staying power: Witness the Bluebonnet Bowl in Houston, which lasted from 1959 to 1987, and the Aloha Bowl, a Hawaii staple from 1982 to 2000.
Then there were the one-year wonders like the Bluegrass Bowl in 1958 in Louisville, Kentucky, and Aviation Bowl in 1961 in Dayton, Ohio.

Jumbo Postcard from the Hollywood Bowl, Hollywood, California
Beginning with completion of Phase 1 in 1995, Bowl patrons and performers alike have benefited from significant improvements to the facility, including more comfortable seating; enhanced dining options; increased accessibility to all areas of the amphitheater; an updated box-office plaza, backstage area, and parking lots; substantially expanded restroom facilities; and much more.
But never during its long and illustrious history has the Bowl's programming been limited solely to symphonic events; fully staged operas were a regular part of the season in the early years, and the famed Bolshoi Ballet appeared during the 1950s.
In the future, the Hollywood Bowl will continue to expand the scope of its concert activities while also continuing its regimen of facility maintenance and upgrades that will enhance the concert-going experience for audiences at the world-famous concert center today and in the future.

Commissioners voted 5-0 to enter discussions with Ft. Lauderdale-based SheltAir Aviation Services to provide parking and other ground services for airplanes to be parked on city airport property that is not part of the lease with the current operator, McGill Aviation Corp.
Because the number of planes is expected to be double that of the busiest weekend previously, McGill's leasehold is insufficient to provide parking for all the planes.
Mearns and City Commissioner John Crow, who serves on the city's Super Bowl planning committee, met with McGill Aviation representives on Dec. 15 and confirmed that McGill intended "to use portions of the airport, including the runways and the new ramp," not included in the company's leasehold area.
