 909. Fenthion (Pesticide residues in food: 1995 evaluations Part II Toxicological & Environmental)
In experiments in which fenthion was used as an avicide, secondary poisoning of starling predators was seen after the perches of starlings were smeared with fenthion.
In a field experiment in Kenya in which fenthion was used as an avicide, cholinesterase activities < 20 µmol/min per g were taken to indicate exposure, and activities < 10 µmol/min per g indicated severe sickness or death.
The residue concentrations reported in house sparrows poisoned by fenthion used as an avicide were 6 µg/g in carcass, 631 µg/g in feathers and skin, and 1152 µg/g in feet; the total fenthion content of the carcass would be 166 µg on the basis of a body weight of 27.7 g.

ABC Opposes Poisoning of Two Million Re-winged Blackbirds
DRC-1339 was originally developed in the 1960's as an avicide to control starlings in animal feedlots and is marketed as Starlicide.
Effective methods that have been successfully deployed in the past, or could be implemented in the future are mentioned in the APHIS-Wildlife Services, May 21, 2001 Federal Register Notice and include altering farming practices; using noise, distress calls, and visual frightening devices; growing decoy crops; increasing weed control; and growing bird-resistant sunflowers.
Two avicides that act as repellents, anthraquinone and methyl anthranilate, have limited registrations and have been tested on a few bird species.

Avitrol’s one of those acutely toxic chemicals that slid in under the wire, receiving the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s blessing before the pesticide laws were tightened.
But for the time being, it’s classified — thanks to those original songbirds — as a “flight alarm tool” and not an avicide.
Which means that, even though powdered Avitrol is Class I, with most applications restricted to certified professionals, the company doesn’t have to answer to public pressure for killing birds.
