  Avidius Cassius - LoveToKnow 1911
In 175 the emperor Aurelius fell ill, and his wife Faustina, to secure her position in case of his death, offered her hand and the throne to the successful general.
A rumour of Aurelius's death having reached Syria, Cassius, without waiting for confirmation, proclaimed himself emperor; when the report proved false, it was too late for him to draw back, and he accordingly prepared for war.
While in Illyria, he received the news that Cassius had been slain by his own officers.

Avidius Cassius - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A native of Cyrrhus in Syria, he was the son of Gaius Avidius Heliodorus, a noted orator who had become prefect of Egypt.
Continuing in his revolt even after he learned that Marcus was still alive, the latter began to prepare for war, while at the same time expressing his hope that Cassius would not be killed or commit suicide, so that he would have the opportunity to mercifully pardon the rebellious general.
After three months, Cassius was murdered by a centurion; his head was sent to Marcus, who refused to see it and ordered it buried.

Cassius Dio — Epitome of Book 72
Cassius, who was a Syrian from Cyrrhus, had shown himself an excellent man and the sort one would desire to have as an emperor, save for the fact that he was the son of one Heliodorus, who had been content to secure the governorship of Egypt as the reward of his oratorical ability.
Marcus, when he was making preparations for the war against Cassius, would accept no barbarian assistance, although many nations rushed to offer their services; for he declared that the barbarians ought not to know of the troubles arising between Romans.
Cassius, it appears, while proceeding on foot, had encountered Antonius, a centurion, who suddenly wounded him in the neck, though the blow was not exactly a mortal one.

However, where there was no such threat, or where the threat was over, as after the revolt of Avidius Cassius, then Marcus’ aim was to be conciliatory and constructive.
If Avidius Cassius had not rebelled in 175, taking the emperor’s attention from the north, Marcus might have gone down in history as one of the great military strategists of the empire.
