AVILA, a province of central Spain, one of the modern divisions of the kingdom of Old Castile; bounded on the N. by Valladolid, E. by Segovia and Madrid, S. by Toledo and Cficeres, and W. by Salamanca.
The ancient walls of Avila, constructed of brown granite, and surmounted by a breastwork, with eighty-six towers and nine gateways, are still in excellent repair; but a large part of the city lies beyond their circuit.
Avila also possesses an old Moorish castle (aicdzar) used as barracks, a foundling hospital, infirmary, military academy, and training schools for teachers of both sexes.

Hola Alberto, if you can read Spanish there is a superb site called Avila Net with all the information you request.
Avila town is beautiful very quiet and with lots of interesting monuments and churches to visit.
I suppose you can get the best advice right there about the interesting places you can visit nearby : : I would like to visit the town and the province of Avila next month and I would like also to find a small flat to rent and spend a month there.
