Clément Ader - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Following the wreck of the Éole, Ader undertook the construction of an aircraft he called the Avion II (also referred to as the Zephyr or Éole II).
Most sources agree that work on this aircraft was never completed, and it was abandoned in favour of the Avion III, However, Ader claimed in later life that he flew the Avion II in August 1892 for a distance of 200 yards (200 m) in Satory.
Some witnesses contend that the Avion rolled, took off towards the sky and, before the official commission, flew a distance of more than 300 yards (300 m), while others contend that the Avion III crashed before even taking off.

The Pioneers : An Anthology : Clément Ader (1841-1926)
Clément Ader's Avion III, otherwise known as the "Bat", one of the centrepieces at the Musée des arts et métiers, was restored in the 1980s by the Musée de l'air et de l'espace at its workshop in Meudon, near Paris.
X-rays of the 'arm' of Avion III showed its hollow inner space to be criss-crossed with thin wooden rods driven into the sides of the tube.
The wrecked 'Avion' and the refusal of the French War Ministry to grant any more funds for further experiment are sufficient evidence of the need for working along the lines taken by the pioneers of gliding rather than on those which Ader himself adopted.

Ader Avion II The ''Avion II'' (sometimes referred to as the ''Zéphyr'' (west wind) or the ''Éole II'') was the second primitive aircraft designed by Clément Ader in the 1890s.
Most sources agree that work on it was never completed, Ader abandoning it in favour of the Avion III that had a financial backer, but Ader claimed in later life that he flew the Avion II in August 1892 for a distance of 200 yards (200 m) at a field in Satory.
The Avion, or one of its relatives has the distinction of being at the origin of ''avion'', the most common word in French to designate an airplane, and the nearest equivalent to the English word "plane".

Air Force Link - Clément Ader
Later in life, in response to unjustified criticism of his earlier Éole, Ader claimed both it and the Avion III had, in fact, been great successes.
In 1911, in honor of Ader's work, the French general Pierre-Auguste Rocques, chief of French Army aviation, directed that Ader's term avion would be the official word for an airplane, replacing the earlier French word aeroplane dating to J. Pline in the 1850s and used by Pénaud and other French pioneers.
The Avion III has survived, and is on exhibit in the Musée de Arts et Métiers in Paris.

Clement Ader's Eole early Flying Machine
Heartened by the, result, Ader had been substantially funded by the French government to research whether the craft could lift off the ground and cover a given distance, and he himself invested all he had in the construction of the Avion III which he presented before the French Ministry on October 14.
The 'Avion' was demonstrated before a group of French military officers and according to the inventor and some of the witnesses, the 'Avion' actually took off the ground, but fearing a collision with nearby obstacles, Adler cut off the steam and the machine was wrecked.
Its successor, the Avion III, was tested on two occasions late in 1897; but there is no real evidence to support the claims of Ader, made in later years, that this succeeded in becoming airborne.

In August 1892 the Avion II flew for a distance of 200 metres, and on October 14, 1897, Avion III flew a distance of more than 300 metres.
They made their first successful test flights on December 17, 1903 and by 1905 Flyer III was capable of fully controllable, stable flight for substantial periods.
Strictly speaking, the Flyer's wings were not completely fixed, as it depended for stability on a flexing mechanism named wing warping.

Nevertheless, Ader's flight was the first demonstration that a powered aircraft could in fact fly, and the success spurred the French military to fund the construction of a larger and more powerful vehicle of the same basic design.
This "flight" marked the end of Clément Ader's aeronautical experiments for the lack of success of the Avion III led the French Ministry of War to cancel further funding.
